Patriots LB Jerod Mayo announces retirement

New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayoannounced on Instagram that he is retiring from the NFL. Mayo thanked Bob and Jonathan Kraft, Bill Belichick, and Patriots fans for "contributing to these pages of our lives."

Mayo played eight years with the Patriots, made two Pro Bowls, one All-Pro team, and played in one Super Bowl.

"As my family and I prepare for the future," Mayo said, "Be sure that the Pats memories will always hold a special place in our hearts."

was he under contract? If so that should help the salary cap a little, no?

Yes. The Pats had the option to pick it up.

I read somewhere that Mayo's retirement will save the Patriots $7 million dollars in cap money. I hope he resurfaces with the team in the front office or on the coaching staff. Jerod was one heck of a player.

Maybe free up some money for Forte? Though I still don't think they are going to try and get him

Pats were absolutely guaranteed to release him anyway. Retiring and releasing has no difference to the cap hit so Pats don't save any additional money given this decision. Either way Mayo has been a shell of himself since injury, don't see any reason the Pats would've kept him on the roster.

Very good player and was a beast when healthy, but just is what it is in this game and the corresponding front office.

Farewell and all of the best. Had a great career but the last two years have been a physical torture.

Eligible for the Patriot Hall of Fame in 2019.

Looks to be $6.5M in cap space freed - and $4.4M in dead money per Miguel @ patsfans. He knew BB was going to cut him... nice way to go out.

Time to start a career as a LB coach. Hopefully, the Pats will offer him a position if he is interested.
