There was an article in the SJMerc a few days ago where the writer had a new premise : the young starting pitching staff are the new leaders in the clubhouse.

BCraw's blog (Brandon and Brandon) had a recent post (Dealing With Failure – Brandon Crawford Brandon and Brandon) where Craw said (among other things) :

On Friday, the day after my bad game, Matt Cain pulled me aside to remind me that everyone has down times. As a pitcher, he said, he knows he’s going to have bad starts. That’s baseball. He said everyone knows I’m a good player and I should never doubt myself. It was a really nice thing for him to do, and helpful, too.

A real class act, picking up a teammate, and a mark of leadership. I'm glad we have him for years to come.

I asked Alex Pavlovic at the end of spring training who had emerged as team leaders (given the turnover from a year ago ), and he immediately singled out Matt Cain. Huff, at that time, was also mentioned.

Good find, good quote, good stuff.

It's great to see Cain assume this role.

1) Teams need leaders, veterans who have been through the fire. Huff could have been that guy at one time, but obviously other issues have emerged with him.

2) To outsiders (like myself in NC), Cain seemed detached emotionally, almost aloof. It's nice to see he is not those things underneath and where it counts. It's cool to see him connect and lead like this.

3) Cain is a great candidate for this. As you say, he'll be here for many years. He's consistent and very talented as a player. He's level-headed as a person. He's exactly the kind of guy you want on your team showing the way.

Very pleasing to see this. Thanks. Repped (as soon as I can).
