"Tell me what aggressive free agency the Pittsburgh Steelers or Baltimore Ravens have had. Yet Pittsburgh has been in how many Super Bowls in the same time frame?" Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said at the NFL scouting combine. "You win by developing your own players and not overpaying for a guy you’re not sure how he’s going to work out."

Sounds like we're not going after anybody worthwhile

Hmmm...and what do those two other teams do better than most?

Nothing better than giving guaranteed money to guys who've never played a snap in the nfl then :der:

What a fucking joke and an insult to the intelligence of the fans...

The Steelers were tens of millions of dollars over the cap before restructres. The Bengals had the most cap space in the NFL last season and still let one of the best CBs in the leauge walk as an unrestricted FA instead of tagging him...

one team is finding loophole to pay their players as much as possible. the other owner is pocketing all of the money he can get

Yeah letting JJ leave kinda goes against that "develop your own guys"philosophy.

we develop players for the rest of the league, that's why they don't shut us down for having to draw money away from other teams. The Bengals are the welfare case of the NFL, Brown is loving it.

Our strategy is always the same. We approach players 2 years before their contract is up. At this point, some players will sign a long term deal at lesser value than they would get on the open market. This gives them insurance against injury as well as an immediate payday. That's how we kept Chad during his prime and it's why we have Whit and Hall locked up now. It actually worked well for Leon as he cashed in before a potential career ending injury.

Unfortunately for us, many players like to wait until FA, and we all know we aren't offering top dollar once they hit that point.

I don't know if it was free agency, but didn't the Steelers get Jerome Bettis off of the Rams, either free agency or trade? I would say he was kind of important to their winning seasons...

Bengals offered JJ money, more than Texans. He said so when the two teams met the first time. He simply thought the Texans had a better shot a winning. can't blame him.

Also, in order to develope your own players, the guys you draft have to, you know...not suck.

Bottom line is the Bengals had a chance to lock Joseph up before he hit the market, instead they decided to low-ball him early on, as has become the norm in the organization.

Except Joseph never said the Bengals low-balled him. He said the offer they made was fair, and in some ways, better than Houstons' deal. He wanted to test the market, and chose to go to a winning team. The Bengals screw a lot of things up...this was not one of them. I don't get why it's so hard for people to accept that Joseph received a fair deal (per joseph) and he simply chose to go to a team that looked like it had a better chance to win (per joseph). End of story.

Because they had options.... They could have franchised him. I think they decided that they only wanted to extend one of their first round corners and they were further along with Leon Hall.

That is correct. They were only going to offer 1 CB.

Losing JJ sucked, but without Lawson and Howard, this defense isn't as good as it was this past year. That money came from JJ when he left for the Texans. Along with Clements, who, while not great, was servicable most of the season.

Opening the story back up...

They began negotiations the year prior and lowballed him. They lost him to their own stupidity.

Which part of that is too hard for you to understand? Pray tell...

Teams low-ball players every day of the week. How is that hard for you to understand?

In the end, Joseph said the deal the Bengals made was financially a fair offer, and in some ways better than the Texans. He went with the Texans because of the chance to win. End of story. Sorry you can't seem to get that through your head.

Yes, had the bengals came in off the bat with a great number, maybe they could have signed JJ long-term and he never goes to the Texans. But, it's rare that negotiations go that way. 99% of the time, the team comes at a player from way down under, and the player is coming from way up top. You hope you can meet in the middle, but also knowing that they had Hall to fall back on if things didn't work out, the Bengals didn't feel the need to drastically overpay JJ. Oh well.

His money was well spent on players that impacted 3 positions instead of just his one.

Wrong again, the Bengals offer the year prior was not at fair market value. They tried to play the 'sign for less now, but assure yourself of that money without the risk of injury over the next season'.

Sure, you low ball early, but if you have a genuine interest in signing a player long term that is beyond only trying to get him on the cheap, then you'll eventually reach an agreement. And that agreement will be in the middle, not "drastically overpay" as you're arguing (though obviously only to fit your own argument). However, the Bengals in typical fashion decided that hey, if we can't get him cheap, then we'll allow the market to dictate his value. And all this is only further evidenced by how fast they locked up Hall after losing Joseph. They knew they made a mistake and they weren't going to do it again with Hall.

If the Bengals had really wanted Joseph and not only at a cheap price, he'd be a Bengal right now. It's clear cut. The Bengals screwed up. They lost him.

It's straight forward. Though not surprising you can't seem to grasp it. Just sayin'.

Love how you can say you "know for sure" that he would have signed. Fact is, you don't know. Fact of the matter is, the Bengals could have potentially offered him fair money and JJ may have still wanted to test the market knowing he would be one of the top CB's out there. Banking on someone over-paying, or maybe a winning franchise, with a real shot of winning something, would come calling for him.

No one will know for sure. All we know are the facts, and they are: JJ said Bengals gave him fair offer(s). He chose Texans because he thought they were in a better position to win games/championships. The was in the interview he gave prior to the first matchup between the Texans and Bengals.

To "assume" he would have signed a year before if offered decent money is purely speculation at this point. For someone who always bitches about facts and stats...tell me where it is out there said by JJ or his agent, that he would have 100% re-signed with the bengals a year earlier if he wasn't "low-balled" as you claim. You can't.

Love how you want to bitch and moan against anyone who dares disagree with you. I'm not surprised, though. That's your M.O. on this board. Way to be original, and resort to lowly personal attacks when someone disagrees to infer that they are dumb, stupid, or a moron. I'm surprised you haven't resorted to the flat out name calling yet. Nicely done.
