After ANOTHER blown save that quite likely ends the Yankees' season, it's been rumored that the Red Sox will be holding another celebration for Mariano tomorrow night before the game to give him more gifts and worship.
Wow, how bad can it get for this guy?

How does it end the Yankees season? It sucks to lose like that, but they had no business even being in that position, and they're 3 back in the loss column with 22 games to play. And why would the Red Sox hold a celebration before a game when the series is at Yankee Stadium?

Seriously, grow up. Your act is getting old. I've never seen a moderator troll his own board. It's really sad.

I forgot who the clown was, but there was someone on the ESPN boards who would argue that closers should be judged by only what they do in save situations...so last night's appearance by Mo wouldn't count in his book.

I remember Flynn0203 (who was a Cubs fan pretending to be a Yankees fan) would constantly say Rivera was better than Maddux because he had a lower ERA.

It seems on par with the numerous Brave fans that would argue that Craig Kimbrel is the best pitcher in baseball.

I do remember that.

I remember blg would claim that Guidry should be in the HOF and Blyleven shouldn't because Guidry had the slightest advantages in ERA and ERA+... even though Blyleven had more than twice as many innings pitched.

Are we really comparing todd helton to mariano rivera? Dont get me wrong todd had a solid career and his numbers were inflated playing in colorado. Mariano is the best closer of all time. Its not so much him, its the media and rightfully so. Hes that good, and i hate the yanks.

No one's actually comparing them. But if they are, you're comparing a relief pitcher with 1278.1 IP and 5084 batters faced to a guy who's played 2234 games and has 9397 PA. That's just silly.

So what did I miss, it seems like thats exactly whats happening. We are comparing one players retirement to another and based on their careers there shouldnt be any comparison to the fanfare surrounding their retirement.

Todd Helton joins Hall of Famer Stan Musial as the only players in major league history with at least 2,500 hits, 550 doubles, 350 home runs and a .310 or higher career batting average.

"Helton is nothing." - Mariano fools

Yes, but what exactly is that supposed to mean? Hank Aaron just missed this mark by .005 in batting average. Are we to assume Todd Helton was a better hitter?

For another example, Chris Davis just became the third player to hit 50 HR and 40 doubles in a season, joining Babe Ruth and Albert Belle. Do people think these are the three best seasons in MLB history?

I didn't read anything (or I missed it) in this thread where people were claiming Helton was "nothing"...just that he didn't have the impact that Rivera did.

That people love using arbitrary combinations of stats to make players seem better than they actually are.

If Helton hit 45 more HR and had 4 5less doubles, he wouldn't hit that random combination of numbers, but wouldn't have been any worse.

Can you believe such a gloryhound who demands hero worship is willing to share the spotlight with another player? Do you think Mo is going to put a hit out on Pettitte now for stealing some of his thunder? I gotta imagine such a seedy character as Rivera has the wherewithal to do that.

Well, this has been an interesting thread to read. The op likes Helton. That's fine, nothing wrong with liking your guy. I got nothing against Todd. He's had a solid career and should be proud of it. Enough said. But really now, comparing a retirement of him way out west in Colorado to the spotlight that is the Big Apple and a guy that is a lock for the HOF and considered the best ever at his particular position is really a stretch, to say the least.
Then to put Todd Helton's name in the same sentence with Stan "the man" Musial? Sorry, but this is getting delusional when Helton played all those games in Coors Field. Helton wil be remembered in the hall of very good. Musial is one of the all-time greats. Wow, just wow.:gaah:

Btw, hi to Smarther, Dragon, Stan Marsh, et al from my days over at the fanatic (was tacomagramps over there).

Welcome! Good to see you again. It's a pretty good board here so far from my experience, but just needs a bit more activity so hopefully others follow.
