HammerDown reminds me of how I felt about Mario Lemieux when I was in junior high. I hated him because people had the audacity to say he was better than Wayne Gretzky. So I hurled every insult I could in Mario's direction. Then I grew up and I now acknowledge how amazing Mario was and will even listen to debates about how much better he really was than Gretzky.

No way to tell if Hammer is just fucking with Yankee fans or an incorrigible idiot because I don't pay much attention, but the threads are always entertaining if nothing else. If he is an idiot than it will pass, everyone grows up whether they like it or not.

He's either a very gifted troll or a complete dolt. I have a hard time believing an admin would be a troll. Why troll your own board?

Regarding your first paragraph, I was the same with Michael Jordan. As a teenaged Knicks fan in the early-to-mid 90s, I just didn't want to accept that he was incredible and the best player in the league by a wide, wide margin. I always tried to pick flaws in his game that really weren't there: he's not that good defensively (he was), he takes too many shots (when you're the greatest scorer on the planet, you tend to take a lot of shots), he'd be nothing without Scottie Pippen, he didn't make his teammates better (tell that to John Paxson and Horace Grant). I knew then that I was grasping at straws, and now I fully respect Jordan's greatness.

Mariano...was way more dominate for longer than Helton...and still at the top of his position (ala Kofax at his time of retirement)....Helton should have retired while still good and it wouldn't have been as quite....

And with the good shit him and Pettite are on, they could potentially keep doing it til their mid-50's.

Helton, on the other hand, is on a natural decline in production that those who aren't suspected of PED use always suffer. Mariano? Only getting better.

Strange.

Ignore tabascojet. He follows me around blathering like a fool trying to get some/any reaction out of me. I asked about him and the other mods told me to just ignore him and laugh at him like everyone else does. Works well. :D

Chipper Jones and Mariano Rivera crave the several months of standing ovations and lovely parting gifts, the teary goodbyes and the attention. Bigger glory hounds than the NYC Fire Dept.

Todd Helton on the other hand, the best hitters of his generation, is gracefully retiring without the need for an entire season of personal attention and making it all about him.

Todd Helton > Mariano Rivera

Good article here: Todd Helton's remarkable career winds down without fanfare - ESPN

His stats from 2006-2013 says it all, Todd Helton vanished a long time ago

Your PED paranoia is hilarious. Rivera, who other than being great for a really long time, has no discernible evidence of being a PED user, is just assumed to be on something. Meanwhile, Todd Helton, whose power all but disappeared the year testing started, is clean as a whistle.

Like I've said, are you really this dim/petty/immature, or are you trolling your own board?

NATURAL decline???? look what year Helton started his DECLINE...one could gain steam in an argument by saying "his decline began when PED's where Banned from baseball...or 2007 to 2008 seasons" lol

if you want to blindly say it about Rivera...heck, its really easy to do for about ANYONE of the steriod era...someone in baseball, Canceco, told the truth about the players he named...he also said over 50 percent of MLBers were doing PED's....so he must have not lied about the ones he name...as well as the 50 percent, lol...and he isn't the only one to say over 50 percent...not by a long shot...and from people actually in the game...wheither, players, managers, towl boys...conditioning coaches...etc...

Get a clue...you have less of a chance being correct than any of them...yours is just a 50-50 shot...now think of your odds of guessing about one of YOUR coworkers wheither or not they are doing drugs...I have a 50-50 shot on them...your odds are much better to know with the inside information.

It is already being reported on ESPN that Mariano is "reconsidering" retirement. I knew it!

It's gonna be Brett Favre all over again. :L

Actually, E!SPN is reporting that Joe Girardi thinks Rivera should reconsider, not that Rivera is actually reconsidering. So way to go with that. Rivera has never even mildly intimated that he's reconsidering anything. And that's without even going into the fact that if it's E!SPN reporting it, it's most likely a fabricated story so that their terrible "analysts" have something to talk about.

Troll, troll, troll your boat, son.

Here are the only comments from Rivera in the "article":

""I told you guys already. I don't know why we're talking about this. I've already made my decision [to retire at the end of the season]," Rivera said Tuesday night after earning his 40th save of the season by pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning in the Yankees' dramatic 6-4 victory over the White Sox. "I want to stay home, close the door and do what's next."

Clearly, this is a man who is reconsidering.

Helton's stats make it look like he retired a few years ago.
Mo is going to retire even if Girardi asks him pretty pleases not too..
