Chipper Jones and Mariano Rivera crave the several months of standing ovations and lovely parting gifts, the teary goodbyes and the attention. Bigger glory hounds than the NYC Fire Dept.

Todd Helton on the other hand, the best hitters of his generation, is gracefully retiring without the need for an entire season of personal attention and making it all about him.

Todd Helton > Mariano Rivera

One of the great Trivia Questions in Sports History and I was there... (too bad they lost)

Future Hall Of Famers in Baseball and Football played QB in the same game one time, neither one Started the game, one was taken out of the game because he wanted to play baseball after an injury to the starting QB, the guy that replaced him would go on to start every other game in his college career. Obviously one of the guys in mentioned in this thread. Anyone know who the other guy is and what College they went to and who they played?

That's partially because Mo plays in New York and Helton plays in Colorado.

I remember watching the game. Tennesse vs UCLA Payton Manning and Todd Helton

Another one was Which one of Helton's former teammates backed up Eli Manning at Ole Miss?

Yep, Hard to imagine that going into that game the depth chart looked like this

Starter - Jerry Colquitt
Back Up - Todd Helton
3rd String - Peyton Manning

Its funny I have been to the last 3 Tennessee-UCLA games. The best was when Cobb and Webb ran all over UCLA.

You asking me THAT?

I'd say that's half of it, the other half being that Mariano is a gloryhound and Helton just plays the damn game.

Therein may lie another problem...Helton's played awful this year and if he weren't a longtime Rockie great, he probably would've lost his starting job by now. Does he really want to draw attention that?

I respect players who know when to quit.

However Rivera is still doing well, so I don't dislike him for it.

This. Helton isn't as popular, or as well known as a player. Plus Rivera is the greatest closer of all time, and has the best cutter in history. Helton has never really been the best at his position throughout his career, he's been more of a solid performer throughout.

Helton was a good hitter (... but....most probably a juicer - GIANT SPIKE during "those" years) .... but.... pitches don't move as much in the thin atmosphere of Denver.

Helton at Coors Field = .346
Helton at OPPONENT = .288

No one will talk on either one of them. I think Mariano's HGH use will be much like Lance Armstrong before he was exposed; you dare mention it in social circles and people treat you like a leper. Pujols on the other hand, I think he's going to get caught. It's already started.

Helton was a nice player but I thought he already retired. You're comparing him to Mo ? Seriously ?

On the other hand nobody really gives a rats ass whether Helton was a juicer or not and there's at least as much evidence him as there is against Mo... which is to say it mostly comes from haters pulling shit out of their asses.

I'm sorry, but maybe if Todd Helton hadn't been a terrible player for last several years of his career (and mysteriously faded as a power hitter once PED testing went into place) people would make a bigger deal about his retirement. I think people are more surprised to hear that Helton is still playing than to hear about his retirement.

Hard to be a gloryhound when you've basically had no glory in half a decade. Rivera and Jones are first ballot Hall of Famers who were great to the very end.

I assume you meant to put "one of" the best hitters of his generation.

That's really not the case though. There are at least a dozen hitters who were better than Helton. At least. He was an elite hitter for such a brief period, then fell off a cliff. And those years as a great hitter came in the most hitter-friendly park in baseball history, so....

I can't remember, did they have a farewell tour for John Olerud? Because that would be more valid comparison than Mo & Chipper.
