It is a good thing that a lot of the people here aren't Packers fans or running that team. Aaron Rodgers didn't start until his third season. How quickly would y'all have given up on that first round pick? (Picked in the 20s also). Maybe some players take a little more time to develop?

The difference, marcus smith has no ability. I told you all this when we drafted him. He has ZERO ability!

He cant overpower, bullrush, swim, hump, dip, rip, turn, lean, hand fight, be aggressive at tge point of attack.

He has no nasty streak, he has no motor, he cant find the ball, he gives up once hands get on him.

He cant defend the run, he literally has zero nfl ability

He has very little in college. Almost all his sacks came from blown blocking assignments or coverage sacks.

He cannot play. He has less ability than mike mamula had... and we all know how mr "almost sack" panned out.

When he was drafted I told you guys this and I got blasted.

Marcus smith's numbers got him drafted because howie uses production as the end-all/be-all in his process and thats the last thing you should care about when picking talent for your nfl franchise.

Its like taking colt Brennan over andrew luck.

We went through this thoroughly last year on kffl. There are literally dozens of examples we reviewed of pass rushers who didn't sniff the field in year one and went on to hall of fame careers.

I will take your word for it on the current tape. This is why they have coaches and strength trainers. Player development. Its simply too soon to tell what Marcus Smith will become.

I agree, but the difference is those guys had a foundation, athletic ability, attitude, hand fight ability, at least a move or two. Smith has nothing...

Heres the think about pass rushing. Stuff happens so fast in the trenches, your actions have to be either instinctual, or drummed and braten into you since high school. Smith is an nfl pro who has shown no moves on tape. I cant remember a guy who did that, jpp was probably the most raw, but his lean, long arms and get off was insane. Smith has none of those things.

Youd think a dude 251 lbs would have a lightning get off,

Brandon graham is 20 lbs heavier, with much shorter arms and his get off and hand fighting at Michigan makes smith look like camp fodder.

He didn't get on the field because the play of our existing olbs was superior in 2014, than 2013. In 2013, Cole wore down, Barwin had more batted balls than sacks and Brandon Graham was the bust. So we drafted another rush outside linebacker, after trading down once, who didn't see the field bc all the players above him were better. I doubt he played any special teams in college. the jury is still out on the player he becomes, I'm not counting him out yet.

If it was known that the players ahead of him were better than the person they are drafting.... wouldn't it make more sense to draft someone else... in the 1st?

Does anybody actually believe that Howie was sitting in the war room saying, "Let's draft Marcus Smith", and Chip was sitting in the corner with his arms crossed. There is no way Smith would have been picked unless Chip was at least somewhat on board with the pick. I don't know how true it is, but I read maybe a month ago, that the way they worked the draft was Chip and Howie each had a list of players they liked at that pick. If a player was on one list and not the other, they went to the next player until they came to one they both liked. Obviously, it's a poor way to run a draft, but it would make some sense for why they reached.

If true... that is a formula for picking any player too high and letting better talent get away from you.

It's a recipe for disaster. I wish I still had the link to post. Anyway, the point is that, obviously, to some degree, both Chip and Howie liked Marcus Smith to some degree. I just don't understand the ridiculous claims that some people make that this pick was all Howie and Chip had no say.

lol right? I agree with you 100%. At worst Chip liked Marcus Smith as a 2nd round talent, just like how most of us liked him as a 2nd round prospect. Hell, if we picked Matthews in the 1st and Smith in the 2nd -- would we be having this conversation about Marcus Smith already being a bust. Let these kids grow and have a chance before we start labeling them a bust -- it was his rookie year for christ sake.

Perhaps that's precisely why Howie lost control over personnel....

2nd? Yup, 3rd yup. Maybe 5th or 6th id be ok, but his film is so mediocre he really shouldn't have been taken before round 4 at the highest. I personally wouldn't have taken him at all, but I'd be ok with smith in round 5. But even that would be bad money at this point.

he cant even get on kickoff or punt coverage teams guys... I mean come on!

He has no pass rush instinct. No toughness, no heart. Hes like the nate allen of pass rushers.

Marcus Smith was recruited out of HS as a dual threat QB. We all knew he needed time to develop. He has the size, length and athleticism you look for as a 3-4 OLB. He is very fluid and shows the ability to play in coverage. He needs to refine his pass rush moves and get a lot stronger - we all knew this. He seems to be a good kid with a good work ethic, so now is too early to panic. He might turn out to be a bust…but he also might turn out to be a player with development. Regardless, it's way too soon to be labeling him a bust.

Chip Kelly says he had little to do with drafting OLB Marcus Smith 26th overall last season.

Smith was the least impactful first-round pick of 2014, as he played just 74 snaps and made zero solo tackles. The selection was deemed a reach at the time and apparently one Kelly -- who didn't have full control over personnel back then -- didn't want to make. So now Smith heads into 2015 with a coach that feels no obligation to give him snaps behind starters Connor Barwin and Brandon Graham.

Wow! Talk about a coach washing his hands of a player.

Who would trade for a guy like that? If he can't get on the field this year, the only option would be to cut him.
Well we cut Djax with 10x the talent so...
