I still think they'll sign Smith, but I don't owe anything. They tried to re-sign Smith first. If Smith had signed, they wouldn't be trying for Manning now.

Apparently the 49ers don't think too highly of Smith. They probably gave him a lowball offer. Low enough where if he were a one-year wonder, it wouldn't hurt too much to go after a different QB. Otherwise, if it were a decent offer, there is no way Smith wouldn't have accepted with the few QB openings around the league, and especially now with ther 49ers interest in Manning. Heck, both Campbell and Orton - both borderline starters - settled for backup roles in the first 2 days of FA.

I believe the 49ers wanted to cover their own asses by offering Smith a contract in case they deemed Manning not healthy to the standards they expected. No reason to isolate Smith by waiting a week or so into FA prior to offering him a deal. It would've been obvious why (Manning). And this is only further evidenced by the fact that the 49ers were so secretive about the whole thing. Smith probably had no idea. Additionally, on Sunday, Smith was quoted as saying they were close to a deal. No other reason to not already be locked up.

Even then, if Manning does go to the 49ers, I still would not be surprised to see Smith end up signing there on the cheap as a backup.

Nonetheless, as I've said in the past, they'd be idiots not to go after Manning, assuming he's healthy.

I can't imagine Manning being their fall back plan for Alex Smith.

Manning and Smith both share the same agent..

I'm sure they've had contract negotiations with Smith, but he's obviously the fall back option here

Well of course you take Manning if you can get him. Denver is the favorite though.

If they have cap space, the Niners are definitely the best team for Manning. They'd be Superbowl contenders immediately. They're by far the best fit. Get a decent receiver or two and they're set.

I'd love to see this happen, but don't think they'll throw out the money for him.

Yup. You don't secretly workout a player the very first opportunity you get if he isn't your priority.

I'm going to laugh if they don't get Manning and Smith signs elsewhere

That is when Orton will regret signing in Dallas so soon.

But really there is nowhere for Smith to go. Miami is not going to sign him over Flynn. And there really aren't any other teams looking for a QB. Maybe Cleveland could work him out? But by that time, the 49ers will know whether they have Manning or not. And if not, Smith will be back. And if they DO sign Manning, he might be back anyways.

I don't think the Niners get Manning. Denver has more cap room, Tennessee is where he went to school and a lot of people don't think Harbaugh is a good fit with Manning.

The Niners are probably the favorites right now given Manning's age. The only drawback for him is competing with his brother for the NFC title. Tennessee is probably up there as well since Manning obviously has roots there and apparently his wife is from around there as well. I don't think Denver has much of a shot.

Peyton Manning would work with any coach. Anyone who suggests otherwise is full of it.

From what I'm hearing the Niners are not the favorites.

Who are you 'hearing' it from? I believe very little of what is out there in the media with regards to the Manning situation..... He has so many ties to the media that he can control all info and keep things as private as he wants. It's all speculation.

The best situation for him to win would be with the 49ers. From a comfort perspective I have to think the best situation would be Tenn (played college in TN, head coach played with dad, etc.). Not sure what appeals to him about Denver..... He'd have to cooexist with another legendary qb and he would have to replace a guy that people feel some sort of religious attachment.

Just different guys on Twitter. "Sources" have Tennessee and Denver both ahead of SF.

Denver has the most cap room, and can sign him for more money than the other two teams as well as get him some help.

I hope he goes to Tenn and beats the Colts twice a year for the next 5 years.
