Yeah, I agree. It's not like they singled Lynch out, they make everybody do it. I remember in 97 the Broncos offensive line did not talk to the media. They even had an elaborate fine system in place for guys that were quoted in the paper, or gave an interview, or whatever. Anyway when they went to the Super Bowl they voted to talk to the media because the NFL threatened to fine them a lot of money.

Yes, these guys are football players, but part of the reason the sport is popular is because it gets covered by the media. So part of your job as an NFL player is to be available to talk to the media.

They didn't make him do it. He could have chosen to take the fine. He's got more than enough money. If he was that dead set against it, he should have just chosen to pay the fine.

Meh, he's no victim. And he knows that.

The Pro Football Writers Association is a joke for claiming to be appalled by his lack of openness yesterday. It was enough to satisfy the NFL, yet these entitled media members feel that he owes them more. There's 150 other players and coaches to talk to, go talk to one that wants to talk.

the media is responsible for the bulk of revenue earned by the NFL so, right or wrong, they have reason to bitch about it

this may be his only experience in the big game so I was surprised he didn't embrace it a bit more and throw the media a bone with a little more meat on it

But the NFL themselves were fine with it.

I don't agree, but I don't think any player should be forced to talk to the media if he does not want to. Freedom of the press does not mean we have to answer to them. It's a BS call by the league IMO

It's not a freedom of the press issue, it's an employer/employee issue. The league says he has to do it or pay a fine. If he doesn't like those choices, there's the third option of getting employment somewhere else.

understood - per the CBA, the players have to make themselves available to the media. Apparently 6 minutes of availability met the standard for the league

eh, i can't say player or coach interviews ever do anything for me. i don't watch them because they don't say anything. i don't follow this sport for their verbal skills anyway. most of them are not very bright. the only time i watch one is when someone melts down and i see the replay. those are funny at least.

And that's the key. The NFLPA, representing all players, agreed to this in the CBA. That means Lynch agreed to either make himself available for media day or pay a fine.

Personally (I've seen the clip), I'd have chosen to pay the fine. It would have been worth whatever fine they would have given me to be able to not have to sit there like there was a tack in his chair.

But he chose to be there to avoid a fine.

As long as the media said 6 minutes was fine, then it's all good.

I am aware of that and he should have a choice not to talk to them if he does not want to, but he doesn't. He would be punished unfairly if he chose not to. It's bullying by the league. Not sure how the contracts read I would like to see that.

It's not unfair at all. It's part of the CBA. It affects every single player that's part of the NFLPA.

And again, he ultimately has a choice; he can choose to pay the fine if he'd rather. It's not like the NFL is holding a gun to his head.

So technically he could sit down, with a marker and a white sheet of poster board and scribble on the board, " I am not comfortable speaking to the media, but I am forced to be here", hold that sign in place for six minutes then leave and he will have met his obligation.

It's media day during Super Bowl week. They set this day aside for just that reason.

They do this so that the media isn't hounding them trying to interuppt practice.

He could have chosen not to participate - just pay the fine. He can afford it.

Yeah they are, but you can't see that or refuse to see it so I am done with you. Thanks for the input

they have to use that narrative though. They cant use the one that explains him as an illiterate ghetto jerk who isn't media savvy and too immature to handle it

I refuse to see that the NFL is holding a gun to his head? Gee, could you provide a picture of that or something? Surely someone has reported on that!

Again, this is part of the CBA. Talk to the media, or pay the fine. Not that difficult to understand.

What kind of babying BS is this? It is in the rules, do it. I don't like doing everything my employers say but I get over it and get paid millions less to do so. If he cannot stand talking to the media, he can always quit football. Personally, the media should not bother ask these guys questions anyways. How many cliche filled interviews should we watch?
