Fangraphs had a series on this. I only read a little, but the idea is that WAR is not a perfect stat for measuring performance, and it likely never will be- but we can make it better? Any recommendations? Here's the current Fangraphs formula:
WAR = (Batting Runs + Base Running Runs +Fielding Runs + Positional Adjustment + League Adjustment +Replacement Runs) / (Runs Per Win)
So how can we make it better? Most of the ideas revolve around changing other stats, but here's a few of my ideas:
WAR = (Batting Runs + Base Running Runs +Fielding Runs + Positional Adjustment + League Adjustment +Replacement Runs) / (Runs Per Win)
So how can we make it better? Most of the ideas revolve around changing other stats, but here's a few of my ideas:
- Account for each situation. This is similar to what WPA does, but I want it in WAR. A bases loaded walk is not same as a double, yet the player with the double will have a high SLG and wOBA
- Factor in competition. I'm not talking about different era's, but individual pitchers and batters. A home run off Kershaw is not the same as a home run off Jeremy Hellickson
- Change the name, so baseball purists can stop thinking they're witty geniuses when they sing that old Edwin Starr song
