Fangraphs had a series on this. I only read a little, but the idea is that WAR is not a perfect stat for measuring performance, and it likely never will be- but we can make it better? Any recommendations? Here's the current Fangraphs formula:

WAR = (Batting Runs + Base Running Runs +Fielding Runs + Positional Adjustment + League Adjustment +Replacement Runs) / (Runs Per Win)

So how can we make it better? Most of the ideas revolve around changing other stats, but here's a few of my ideas:
  • Account for each situation. This is similar to what WPA does, but I want it in WAR. A bases loaded walk is not same as a double, yet the player with the double will have a high SLG and wOBA
  • Factor in competition. I'm not talking about different era's, but individual pitchers and batters. A home run off Kershaw is not the same as a home run off Jeremy Hellickson
  • Change the name, so baseball purists can stop thinking they're witty geniuses when they sing that old Edwin Starr song

one of My biggest problem with WAR is the position adjustment for offense... I don't think offense should get one...

actually I would like to see a batting order spot adjustment... I think that would be very interesting...

Also, I would prefer a total separation between oWAR and dWAR with WAR...

I don't like the all encompassing, I think it lies a little... Because lets face it, defense might be very important, but it is not as important as hitting... and as long as you are above league average defensively, the difference of being Great is very minimal...

We need a WAR that takes grit and hustle into the equation.

I think there needs to be an adjustment for starting pitchers. When a guy plays 30 games there's no way he should have a WAR of 7. For fucks sake Julio Teheran has a WAR of 3.63 despite the fact he's 3-8. He literally has a WAR higher than the games he's won. Lol

When your "wins" above replacement is MORE than your TOTAL wins then yes it's messed up. I don't generally care much about W-L but there is a zero percent chance Teheran is worth almost 4 WAR because the Braves have only won 4 of his starts all year lol
