Through his infinite generosity and compassion, the Miller forgave he known as the Beast and all was well in the kingdom of hockey until that fateful day 11/23/11...

Fraser: Shanahan missed the call and has sent wrong message

I believe he really missed this call and has sent the wrong message. Like it or not, goalies enjoy preferred treatment similar to endangered species in the wild; at least up until this latest decision. It would now appear they are subjected to the same rules as any other player once they leave the "protection of their nest!" Lindy Ruff has every right to call foul on this non suspension. Milan Lucic should have been suspended for the next two (2) games.

I attended a meeting one summer with team general managers and coaches to discuss various topics on the game. A hot topic on the agenda was protection of the goalkeepers. It was generally agreed that goalies deserved preferential treatment and marked "untouchable" for a variety of reasons. (Rule 42-charging- pretty much makes goalies immune to body contact from opposing players.)

so according to Fraser and all the GMS in the league they really fucked up by not suspending Lucic.

I'm kind of surprised at how many people on this board think that goalies out of the crease should be fair game. Has anyone every played goal? I usually play defense, but occasionally I strap on the pads and defend the pipes. I'm sure it's different for a seasoned NHL veteran, but any time I tried to skate I felt like a clumsy, obese grizzly bear trying to skate out there. Sure, they have lots of extra padding. It's designed to protect against a small speeding puck, not a big skating forward. You lose all your speed, agility, and maneuverability in exchange for 40 extra pounds that keep your shins safe from pucks. Goalies should receive extra protection because they are sitting ducks out there, whether they are in the crease or trying to stop a breakaway/digging out a lose puck.

I'm sure it's sweet in everyone's imagination to see your biggest forward blow up a goalie every time they step out of the crease, but it's just not practical for the game.

I should also add that usually a hit is used to separate the puck carrier from the puck... well if a goalie has the puck and a skater can get close enough to hit him but doesn't have the skill to just strip the puck off him, he needs to re-evaluate his career path. If you're close enough to the goalie to hit him, taking the puck should be like taking candy from a baby.

Any fisticuffs?

While the Sabres have been more physical in this game... No. Words were exchanged but no fight. Its truly sad. Kind of hard to believe how soft the Sabres are playing. Their toughest player seems to be 5'5''.

It also wasn't a big hit like the Looch hit. It was more or less a trip that took Enroth down, but there was no reason for it. Given the recent event, they should have stomped his ass.

I'd say after that last game and the non-fine/suspension for Lucic, the Sabres should be cross checking anyone who looks at their goalie funny right in the fucking teeth.

We weren't behind Miller in Boston and we learned from that. I talked to him after the game, it'll never happen again.

Yet Enroth gets tested in this game and nothing happens. These guys need to grow a pair.

Just saw the replay... Cole actually made shoulder contact with Enroth which spun him around and knocked him down. Although that may have been in OT, so maybe it wasn't such a horrible idea to let it slide seeing as they just tied it up and were going for the comeback.

But still, they were very soft in this game.

I am constantly practicing restraint, as I have not yet found a thread that couldn't be improved with a little March 26 brawl action.

It will be interesting to see what Shanahan does if something like this happens again.

He would have no choice but to not suspend the player because then it looks like he's picking his spots.

I think every game should now have players running over the goalies at will.

Make it so #1!
