Asked about it after the game, Bruins goalie Tim Thomas stated (as quoted by
Jimmy Murphy of ESPN Boston on his Twitter account),I will say that as a goalie, you're not even prepared for people to hit you in a situation like that. You've been trained over the course of your whole career that you're not going to get hit in situations like that. So it must have taken him by surprise.

Red Light Posts Lucic disciplinary decision may prove pivotal

I'm kind of surprised at how many people on this board think that goalies out of the crease should be fair game. Has anyone every played goal? I usually play defense, but occasionally I strap on the pads and defend the pipes. I'm sure it's different for a seasoned NHL veteran, but any time I tried to skate I felt like a clumsy, obese grizzly bear trying to skate out there. Sure, they have lots of extra padding. It's designed to protect against a small speeding puck, not a big skating forward. You lose all your speed, agility, and maneuverability in exchange for 40 extra pounds that keep your shins safe from pucks. Goalies should receive extra protection because they are sitting ducks out there, whether they are in the crease or trying to stop a breakaway/digging out a lose puck.

I'm sure it's sweet in everyone's imagination to see your biggest forward blow up a goalie every time they step out of the crease, but it's just not practical for the game.

Yes I have. Only played maybe ten games my whole life outside of goal. I get what you are saying, and maybe my size is a factor, but if I didn't want to mix it up, I have an area where I am safe. There are special rules to protect me, and no matter what I do I am usually not going to the box.

I get special privileges and it's up to me to respect those privileges. As long as I play within my bounds, I am the golden boy, untouchable. I stray slightly outside those bounds, I simply don't deserve the same protections. Because it's my choice to wander out. And if you do, and don't expect something, you're a fool.

Like a center skating through neutral ice with your head down.

I was surprised Lucic got nothing. He clearly could have stopped. It was unnecessary, and clearly a penalty. And the physical motion of the hit looked eerily similar to a few where Sheriff Shitforbrains has suspended for already.

Anyway, we know the next bumper sticker craze in Flubbalo.
1974 - 2001 "THE FLYERS WERE OFFSIDES"
2001 - 2011 "BRETT HULL WAAAARRRRGARBLE NO GOAL DERP!"
2011 - ??? "THEY DIDN'T SUSPENDED HIM"

from Fraser's article:

The next portion of the rule applies to the Lucic hit on Miller where it goes on to state, "A goalkeeper is not 'fair game' just because he is outside the goal crease area. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an opposing player makes unnecessary contact with a goalkeeper. However, incidental contact, at the discretion of the referee, will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact."

He didn't even get a fine?!? What a fucking joke. Shanahan is no better than the last dunce who was running this wild west discipline. It made no sense then, and it makes no sense now under this new clown. Only difference is shanny just makes pretty youtube videos.

its funny that Shanny makes one non call suspension/fine on a highly publicized hit and he is all of a sudden not doing his job.

He's inconsistent. He's doing his job about as well as Campbell. Which ain't sayin much.

Why would Lucic be given the benefit of the doubt? He has a history of questionable hits. Hell, you only have to go back six months to the series against the Habs and his hit on Spacek.

i think he is doing a way better job than campbell. he is not perfect and noone ever will be as everyones view of what a player does is different this is a prime example. Jeff would probably say he did a great job on this call. IPW not so much

anyway here is a fat kid taking a ball in the face.

Everyone will have an opinion, Ultimately, Shanny's is the only one that matters. I just remember him blabbering on at the beginning of the season about players who've made questionable plays in the past and that it will weigh heavily on any new circumstances.

Well, there is another questionable hit, but it doesn't seem like that factored in much to his current decision on whether or not Milan deserved more than 2:00 in the box.
