What do teams like PIT, WASH, CHI average on full season ticket plans sold? I know a LOT of people with half or quarter packs, but not a lot with full. I'm not sure that even teams like TOR or MON average that high in full season (especially with a 3 year commitment).

The Caps have 12,000 season ticket holders right now and a waiting list. They won't sell any more than that b/c season ticket holders get a sizeable discount and they want to save the extra 6,000-7,000 for partial plan/gate sales where they charge a higher price. Since they've sold out every game for more than two years now, it's probably a smart move.

The 12,000 season tickets have been sold to the limit for (I believe) 3 years now with the waiting list growing.

Well, there's a certain team in the desert that continues to bleed money, there's no chance that they could extract money from the big old pot, is there?

no ... thats True Norths money ... what Im asking is whether the nhl is mandating that they get this large upfront committment so they can hedge as many dollars as they can to protect themselves from exchange rate risk ... because if the cdn$ takes a turn the franchise could be heading for the crapper in short order

i think for their $60 million relocation fee, Winnipeg should be awarded Jonathan Toews

since that is probably going to fund the Coyotes losses not covered by the city of Glendale ... true north should just have the right to pick anyone off the roster of the coyotes ... plus the rights to retiring the jersey/number of Teemu

Isn't the $60 million being split among other NHL franchises as part of the revenue sharing? I thought Glendale already provided capital to cover potential losses and that was part of the package they had to provide to keep the team there. I could be wrong - this shit is complicated.

I don't really understand charging this money to Winnipeg. If you are concerned as a league the market might not be able to support the team, saddling them with $60 million upfront makes no sense. If anything, they should have penned a deal where the franchise kept $x million in reserve only to be used for certain projects (e.g. - arena renovation) or under certain conditions (fiscal crisis).

Artificially bumping the price that much makes no sense when there isn't another bidder in Atlanta you are competing with UNLESS there was another group (Hamilton?) vying for this team in the early stages we are unaware of.

Glendale is committed to covering $25 mill in losses next season (they covered $25 mill in losses this past season)

The Coyotes are losing more than that per season

The league owns the coyotes ... The leagues owners fund their losses

Its either the league appropriates that relocation fee to fund the coyotes losses in excess of the amount covered by Glendale or the individual owners of each franchise write cheques to cover the coyotes losses

6 of one, half dozen of the other

/and Im not taking into account the possibility of the relocation fee being used (with BOG approval) to buy the $50 mill of supposedly still unsellable Glendale municple bond issue

I'm still amazed that more league owners don't complain about this stuff. Seriously. Why the heck is every other successful team paying for one who's unsuccessful?

how do we know they don't privately? Board of governors meetings are probably as entertaining as HBO's 24/7

old guard vs new guard ... i could see a newer owner like the Canucks Francesco Acquilini who is a business titan going in there full of swagger/confidence/bravado and voicing concerns and then being ceremoniously immasculated by a clique of owners that make up the old guard

publically NHL owners have always shown a unified solidarity

Fair points. Also, remember that a significant portion (if not a majority) of NHL owners have all been in the red in some year or another in the last decade, so I'm sure some are sympathetic. Though when the league owns the team, moving them has less complications, and given the amount of money the team in Phoenix is losing, it is a little mind-boggling they remain there.

who's still a part of the old guard then? I feel like there's a lot of newer blood in ownership anymore.

in addition to jstew's points, it should be noted that this "relocation fee" was completely invented out of thin air for this transaction.
It has never been charged (or mentioned) for any of the NHL relocations in the past.

Considering Winnipeg was the only solution for a pretty major league problem, Bettman made out like a bandit
.... and that's why he gets the 5-year extension.

when the Coyotes bankruptcy case was being heard, Ballsillies lawyers pointed out that relocation fee isnt even specifically mentioned in the NHL constitution

Id say Jacobs, Snider are the big 2 ... Karamanos, Ilitch, Rocky Wirtz

and anyone else on the 8 person NHL Executive board has the power to beat down new owners who come to the table with actual good ideas

Well, never say never, but it's hard to imagine these days a Canadian dollar back in the 61-62 cent range like it was back in 2001-2002.

/Then again, who thought a NHL team would ever return to Winnipeg? I sure didn't.

There's a lot of reasons for that...

42% Refusal to address entitlements
21% Overspending on housing, unsecured loans
16% Phoenix Coyotes
11% Unwillingness to just take over Canada
7% Justin Beiber stealing revenue from American artists
3% Wasted productivity on Internet message boards
