Want a crazy L.A. relocation story? Meet the 1946 Cleveland Rams

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Waterfield had to pick up and move to Los Angeles in 1946. Why? Maybe because his owner didn't like Cleveland's weather.

Imagine this: The New England Patriots, fresh off their stunning victory in Super Bowl XLIX, pack up and leave Gillette Stadium after a month.

It's tough to picture -- until you understand that's exactly what the Cleveland Rams did in 1946. With no owner support and odd motives, the then-reigning NFL champions left 30 days into their reign for the bright lights of Los Angeles. Their move would change the league for the 70 years to come.

Owner Dan Reeves cited waning attendance and financial losses for the quick relocation. Others could speculate the move was weather-based one for Reeves; the 1945 Championship game was played at a balmy -8 degrees. Ice and wind made that game the coldest in league history at that point.

But when Reeves announced his intention to relocate his team, other owners refused to back him. Their reasoning? The NFL was an East coast league that spanned as far west as Green Bay. Cross- country travel was a luxury that some owners simply couldn't afford.

Owners relented, due in part to fears a rival league would conquer L.A. and make it their western headquarters. Reeves immediately contacted the Coliseum commission in hopes he could rent their 103,000-seat stadium

He could on one condition -- integration. A reporter from the Los Angeles Tribune, a black weekly, approached general manager Charles "Chili" Walsh and argued his team should be compelled to try out black players if it used public land. That stipulation made its way to the Ram's new stadium lease.

The Rams obliged. The team signed UCLA stars Kenny Washington and Woody Strode. Historians speculate Dodgers owner Branch Rickey cited their success when he added his own ex-Bruin a year later: Jackie Robinson.

The Dodgers wouldn't join the Rams in L.A. for over a decade. Reeves owned the first West-Coast-based major sports team by over a decade. He also owned the first team that would operate a team of scouts.

Lastly, and more consequentially, he owned the first freely-integrated team after World War II -- all thanks to some bad weather, stingy owners, and one inquisitive reporter.

Report: Jerry Jones 'backdoored' deal to get Rams to LA

By Andre Vergara Jan 12, 2016 at 11:09p ET
0shares
The Dallas Cowboys made headlines last weekend with a report that they proposed a joint Rams-Chargers stadium deal to the other 31 NFL teams. On Tuesday, following the Rams' approved move to LA, ESPN's Shelley Smith reported that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones "backdoored this whole deal."

Jones gave a passionate speech on behalf of the Rams' proposed move at Tuesday's vote and called Rams owner Stan Kroenke "godsent" and "an angel," Smith reported. Jones is among the richest and most powerful NFL owners, and according to reports, that group was strongly in favor of relocation. And it's pretty clear why: Kroenke reportedly will write a check for $550 million for the right to relocate the Rams to LA. And that's just for starters.

"Stan committed $2.6 billion," Jones gushed with a grin.

Owners reportedly are bullish on the plans for Kroenke's $1.8 billion stadium in the LA suburb of Inglewood, which is scheduled to open in 2019 and could become one of the premier venues in all of sports.

Jones called it "absolutely the greatest plan ever conceived in sports, as far as how to put the show on." And that plan also "leaves all options open for great cities like St. Louis, believe it or not, Oakland, San Diego," Jones said.

The Chargers were given a year to negotiate a lease agreement to join the Rams in their new stadium. The Raiders, who also applied to move back to LA, could take the Chargers' place if they leave San Diego, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said.

Rams players were quick to jump on Twitter and wish the city that they called home for years goodbye.

Defensive end Chris Long played in St. Louis since 2008 when the franchise spent the No. 2 overall pick on him.

Humbly, eternally gratefully: Thank you St. Louis. I'm sorry we fell short the past 8 years. You treated me like family anyways. I love yall

Chargers will meet with Rams tonight and tomorrow to go over details of Inglewood deal. Dean Spanos will take time to mull over options.

Source: Kroenke can pay relocation fee 2 ways: $550M up front or $64M per for 10 years. Gangsta that he is, he's expected to pay upfront.

Spanos has to feel bad, at best you share a stadium in Inglewood or you make peace with San Diego for a new stadium.

@cerealboi @Rock Strongo Is our friend Cowboy ready to eat some crow on this one?? I was arguing this with him more than a year ago. Didn't he say the Rams weren't legally able to move? Didn't he also say he was no longer a Cardinals fan after Pujols left? Same guy? He has ZERO credibility.

He's nowhere to be seen. With the Cardinals front office cheating, the Cards getting bounced by the Cubs, and the Rams moving, I suspect he's gone for a long time.

Not surprising that Jerrah was involved in this.

Dam the Rams will bring back Bradford for 1 more 6-10/5-11 year and the STL fans will have to watch it. Then in 2016 in LA, the Rams will finally move on from Bradford and watch what happens.

Sorry it's almost funny
