2019 NFL Draft QIB qualifiers: Offensive line

Full QIB qualifiers: Elite athlete

Lions examples: Taylor Decker, Frank Ragnow, Graham Glasgow, Joe Dahl

arrett Bradbury (C, NC State) will be the top interior offensive lineman on most boards but I believe he will slide in behind Lindstrom for the Lions due to his lack of arm length — checking in over an inch shorter than every Lions offensive lineman. This could make him a center-only on some teams boards despite having experience starting at left guard as a sophomore.

Erik McCoy (IOL, Texas A&M) isn’t talked about enough in the Lions community but if the three players above him on this list are off the board his combination of power, athleticism and the ability to play all three interior spots could put him in play for them in Round 2.

T.J. Lang wasn’t a Full QIB qualifier because he didn’t test in every area, but the areas he did, he passed in flying colors. This year, Elgton Jenkins (IOL, Mississippi State) and Connor McGovern (IOL, Penn State) meet these same criteria as neither ran the 40-yard-dash and therefore their profile is incomplete. Both have the capability to play any of the three interior positions, could compete for a starting role in year one and should be considered in the third-round – similarly to Graham Glasgow.

5 takeaways from Todd McShay's conference call

1. McShay released his three-round mock for every team. For Detroit, he has them selecting Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson at No. 8, Louisiana Tech defensive end Jaylon Ferguson in the second round (No. 43), and Iowa State wide receiver Hakeem Butler with their third pick (No. 88).

BB_72; It keeps on getting worse by the day for these mocks.

Butler is the only reasonable pick out of these. I cant see us blowing #8 on a TE or #43 on a project type player to play behind 2 guys we are paying 25 mil a year combined.

2019 NFL Draft QIB qualifiers: Offensive line

Full QIB qualifiers: Position flexible

Lions examples: Tyrell Crosby, Andrew Donnal

Dalton Risner (RT, Kansas State) built his entire blocking platform around it. Risner has experience playing inside as he started at center his freshman season before pushing outside to right tackle the next three years. A shift inside in the NFL could mask a lot of his deficiencies at tackle and if the Lions select him he would be a plug-and-play right guard.

If the Lions pass on Risner, Kaleb McGary (RT, Washington) offers a similar projection but at a cheaper price. He plays with a mean streak, offers power in the run game and a solid anchor as a pass blocker. If he can improve his consistency, he would challenge to start at right guard for the Lions.

Rounding out the Day 2 options in this group, Max Sharping (LT, Northern Illinois) and Greg Little (LT, Mississippi) have the athletic profile to shift inside, but like Williams, they lack the consistency/power in the run game and hand technique to stick inside in the NFL.

I couldn't resist posting it because it was absolutely absurd. Ferguson will be lucky to be drafted early day 3, imo. Butler isn't making it to late 3rd round because this draft doesn't offer much and teams will see him as a red zone target, imo.

STUD - CB Amani Oruwariye to Kansas City
You guys! This one could *actually* happen! The Super Bowl odds had Kansas City picking a little higher than they are in real life (but the Chiefs should also be picking even lower...thanks, Dee Ford). But hey, this pairing is still possible. Amani has an outside shot at the first round after some excellent athletic testing and performing well throughout the course of his first full season as a starter.

BB_72; As much as I would like to draft Oruwariye I also think he's drafted in the back end of round 1.

Building the Perfect Cornerback From 2019 NFL Draft Prospects | The Draft Network

Size/Athleticism: Isaiah Johnson, Houston
A converted wide receiver, Johnson is still raw and developing at cornerback but there is no question that he features the top blend of size and athletic ability among this year’s class. Checking in at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds with 33-inch arms, Johnson clocked a 4.40 40-yard dash, 133” broad jump, 4.06s short-shuttle and 6.81s three-cone drill.

Kent Lee Plate, who tracks size measurables and athletic testing for his Relative Athletic Metric, calculated Johnson as the highest-scored cornerback ever, surpassing Marshon Lattimore in 2017.

BB_72; those two pages of RAS# I posted yesterday come from Pride of Detroit write Kent Lee Platte who developed those metrics on his own. Isaiah Johnson intrigues me a lot as a development type CB but just like Justin Layne he'll more than likely be over-drafted due to physical traits. Johnson also had some pretty horrible PFF #'s that I recently ran across.

Building the Perfect Cornerback From 2019 NFL Draft Prospects | The Draft Network

Tackling: Trayvon Mullen, Clemson
Part of Clemson’s dominant defensive units, Mullen is the best tackling cornerback in the 2019 class. Missing only one tackle in 2018, Mullen is as reliable as they come defending the d-gap. Mullen is a secure, wrap up tackler that does well to square up and bring his feet through contact. He rarely concedes additional yards after contact and he routinely makes tackles outside his frame. Like most Clemson defenders, Mullen is an assignment-driven competitor that is an asset defending the run and quick game because of his tackling consistency.

BB_72; Mullen fits what MP looks for in physical traits and especially the tackling prowess he shows. My biggest question with Mullen, like many of this years CB prospects, is that he's still pretty raw with only 2 full years of starting but does have a high football IQ. This is the kid that I suggested could be a much better FS than a CB.

Route Running: Stanley Morgan Jr.
Stanley Morgan Jr. has the most nuanced, varied route running in the class. With above average explosiveness through route breaks, technical refinement and the awareness to alter his stems based on defensive coverages.

Catch Radius: J.J. Arcega-Whiteside
There is no defense for a JJ Arcega-Whiteside jump ball. The former basketball player uses a box out technique and full extension to the catchpoint to really expand his catch radius.

BB_72; I still believe Arcega-Whiteside is one of the two best route runner's in this class. I had Riley Ridley as the other. He doesn't have the speed to beat a heavy induced stay-on press but his nuanced steps at the top of his stem does.

Technical Prowess: Jakobi Meyers
Meyers crisp footwork and natural cuts allows him to create passing windows with excruciating consistency, despite less than ideal speed. These traits will make him a third-down threat at the next level.

BB_72; Love this kids ability to win with his footwork, extension of hands. Meyers is my day 3 version of N'Keal Harry however a somewhat shorter-lighter type. Meyers is more inline with 5th/6th round, imo.

Releases/Beating Press Coverage: Terry McLaurin
McLaurin has the necessary speed and agility to thrive through the contact window. His experience as a punt gunner gives him a natural feel for closing space down and hand usage while facing press coverage.

BB_72; I've been talking up McLaurin for two months now and if BQ has drafted a WR by that late round 3 pick then this is my first choice especially if he somehow isn't draft by our 4th round pick (I highly doubt the latter happens but you never know).

Crabbs: 2019 Linebacker Positional Rankings | The Draft Network

7. Bobby Okereke LB, Stanford
_stanford.jpg

It feels like the beginning of Day 3 is where you're going to start to get good value for your picks in this year's LB group. Trunquill carried a 4th RD grade from me, but Okereke leads a pack of six additional off-ball LBs that are very closely bunched together (all within 22 spots on my big board).

Upside is the name of the game here, as Okereke is long, explosive and has promise as a potential 3-down LB.

Overall ranking: 123

BB_72; Okereke is my under the radar pick for the Lions as a chase LB. I wouldn't start to look at him in the draft until round 4 at earliest but due to this class being so weak he may very well get drafted before that. He's not as fast as the Devins but he makes the same damn mistakes as they do by over/under pursuit, missing keys, inability at times to shed blocks (I think he's slightly better than the Devin's in this area). He is a force to be reckoned with in blitz schemes and packages.

Full 7-round Lions mock draft: Spring Break edition

Before the Lions pick at No. 8, here are the players already off the board in no particular order: Quinnen Williams, Nick Bosa, Kyler Murray, Devin White, Josh Allen, Jawaan Taylor, Daniel Jones.

First round: Ed Oliver, DL, Houston

Second round: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, DB, Florida

Third round: Blake Cashman, LB, Minnesota

Fourth round: Josh Oliver, TE, San Jose State

Fifth round: Brett Rypien, QB, Boise State

Sixth round: Corey Ballentine, CB, Washburn and Jalen Jelks, OLB, Oregon

Seventh round: Keelan Doss, WR, UC Davis and Oli Udoh, OT, Elon

I'd be okay with a draft like this minus QB in the 5th (what's the purpose is drafting another QB and that won't become anything other than another wasted pick) and the Jelks picks.

Bryce Love RB, Stanford Cardinal

Rob Rang reports that "a redshirt rookie year is possible" for Stanford RB Bryce Love.
Love (5'9/200) is "hoping" to make a return late this summer, but his ACL surgery was only on December 18th so that would be a fast turnaround for a player that relies on elusiveness and speed. NFL teams will get a medical update before the draft, and the conclusions drawn from that report will dictate how high he goes in the draft. Before an onslaught of injuries, Love was on pace for a fringe first-round pick, but he's currently projected as a Day 3 prospect.

N'Keal Harry WR, Arizona State Sun Devils

Rotoworld's Josh Norris passes along that Arizona State WR N'Keal Harry is taking a predraft visit to the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.
The Phillies are right in range for Harry with the No. 25 pick. The 6-foot, 228-pound wideout figures to be flying off the board late in Round 1 or early in Round 2 later this month. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller, for one, sees Harry off the board within the first 36 picks. Again, right in range for the Eagles should they choose to pull the trigger. Beyond Philly, the Cardinals, Broncos, Lions, Bills and Saints are all teams which have met with Harry during the draft process.

Devin Bush LB, Michigan Wolverines
https://www.rotoworld.com/college-football/nfl-draft/player/39101/devin-bush
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Michigan LB Devin Bush is visiting the Giants on Sunday.
The Giants hold the No. 6 overall selection in the upcoming NFL Draft and are likely doing their due diligence on all of the top prospects. It's no secret they need help on defense and Bush (5'11/234) would be a start. He produced a 97th percentile SPARQ athletic composite score at the NFL Scouting Combine and will likely be selected at some point within the top-15 picks.

Erik McCoy, C, Texas A&M
In surveying team sources, McCoy was mentioned as a player who is rising during the draft meetings. Veteran coaches have been really impressed with McCoy and how assignment sound he is. With a high football I.Q., McCoy doesn't give coaches the typical concerns that come with rookies. McCoy also has been a star of the pre-draft workouts, and team sources believe that he could be a pick in the back half of the first round and should not last long if he slips to Round 2. Some evaluators have McCoy graded higher than where they had Billy Price and Frank Ragnow last year.

J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, WR, Stanford
Arcega-Whiteside was another player who team sources mentioned as rising during team's draft meetings. The big receiver was described as a poor-man's Mike Evans by team sources last fall, and in this weak draft for offensive play-makers, it is somewhat surprising that Arcega-Whiteside has not gotten more attention for being a mismatch weapon who could help NFL offenses put points on the scoreboard. A late rise for Arcega-Whiteside could put him in the middle of the second day of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Terry McLaurin, WR, Ohio State
Sources have said that McLaurin is another player who is rising while teams hold their final round of pre-draft meetings this month. McLaurin really helped himself by running well at the combine after also performing well at the Senior Bowl. He was underutilized at Ohio State and could end up having a much better NFL career than he did in college. McLaurin is in mid-round contention after his excellent postseason.

Darnell Savage, S, Maryland
Savage is the prospect who may end up taking the most pre-draft visits of any player for the 2019 NFL Draft. Thus far, Savage is lined up to visit 10 different teams prior to draft day, and that illustrates a serious level of interest across the league. There is a lot to like about Savage, who is put together well with a strong build and speed. He has some natural coverage skills, being able to play free safety in the deep part of the field as well as slot cornerback. Savage has put together an impressive postseason, putting his skill set on display at both the Senior Bowl and the combine. He could end up going quickly on the second night of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Former Maryland Safety Darnell Savage has Private workouts with Arizona, Carolina, Houston, Indy, Rams, Philly, Pit, Seattle, Tampa, Tennessee.

I really like this kid as a possible addition if MP is wanting to add one to the mix this year.

Chauncey Garner-Johnson would be my No.1 still then Savage right behind in the No. 2

and I wouldn't have a problem if they added Taylor Rapp to the Safety mix as he's regarded as the best run defender by most with good instincts in the short zone coverage of RB/TE but not much for deep Safety running with speed WR.
