The Memphis Grizzlies have definitively decided not to offer coach Lionel Hollins a new contract, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that Hollins and the Grizzlies formally parted company Monday after the parties appeared to be heading for a separation for days.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal newspaper was the first to report Monday night that Hollins' contract would not be renewed.

Grizzlies assistant coach Dave Joerger, sources said, is the overwhelming favorite to succeed Hollins, who departs in the wake of a 56-win season and the franchise's first-ever trip to the Western Conference finals.

In the wake of the most successful season in franchise history, Memphis has nonetheless decided that what has widely been described as "philosophical differences" between the team's new owners and Hollins has necessitated a change on the bench.

Sources say that the Grizzlies have been evaluating other candidates, including freshly ousted Denver Nuggets coach George Karl and former Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry, but are leaning very strongly toward replacing Hollins with Joerger, who essentially served as the Grizzlies' defensive coordinator under Hollins

The Nets must be livid. Last week they asked to speak with Hollins and MEM said no, only to part ways with him a few days after

Why? It's not like they've hired a coach. They can just talk to him now.

Hopefully Shaw would rather coach the Nets instead of the Clippers. Maybe the uncertainty of Chris Paul will get Shaw to come to the Nets, although I hear the Nets are giving Kidd serious consideration. Best case for me at least would be for Shaw to be the head coach and Kidd to be an assistant.

I am kind of surprised they are giving Kidd such a serious look when he just retired from playing. You would think he would at least need some experience as assistant before he takes jump to head coach.

Yea exactly. Its probably because Kidd is revered by Nets fan for single handedly making them relevant in the early 2000s. Kidd is my all time favorite player, but I think he should be an assistant for Shaw for at least a few years before he gets a head coaching job. Even Ewing had to take that path.

I would not hire Kidd as my HC at all right now unless I'm a shitty team like the Bobcats but a playoffs team looking to get better like Brooklyn, I think I'll opt for someone who at least been an assistant for a few years

For the life of me I just can't understand how Brian Shaw has not had a head coaching position. Everywhere he's been has turned into success, albeit as an assistant coach. This past season Indiana took major strides, granted Vogel is pretty decent himself, but you can't tell me that Shaw didn't have his hand in that team's development.

Let me see if I have this right?

The Clippers have the best regular season in the history of the franchise, win the Pacific Division for the first time in their history..........Vinny Del ***** gets fired!!

George Karl win Coach of the Year........gets fired!!

The Grizzlies win a franchise record 56 games, advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in their history..........Lionel Hollins gets fired!!

And the Lakers coach is still Mike D'Antoni!!

:wtf2:

:omg: I never thought about that. This has to be the strangest offseason in the history of the NBA when referencing the ongoing coaching carousel. I'm not a big Lakers fan, but even I was annoyed as to how the Lakers shunned Shaw of the job. That man should be coaching right now. I say that because I want him off of the Pacers squad as soon as possible.

Still ticks me off to THIS DAY, how the F.O gave Brian Shaw the shaft. Dude won titles, coached for us, and had the respect of the locker room. Then he gets no real consideration ONLY because he was tied to Phil Jackson and the triangle offense. As for Lionel Hollins, these metric stat guys are gonna soon learn that metric stats are not the only thing that will determine a good coach. I don't know much about the incoming guy, but those players respected Hollins and he ran the best offense for that team. The ONLY change that needed to be made was to get perimeter help.

:agree:. The Grizzlies were a 3-point shooter and capable wing of being an actual contender. Plus the only players off of their bench was Pondexter and Bayless.
