Isn't this thread right here an extra thread about fighting that came from another thread? So I guess I lost an argument to somebody who lost an argument in the same fashion to somebody else, who lost to somebody, who lost to the person who originally created a thread about fighting?
I'm lost. :D

And just to be clear, I'm not taking a pro- or anti-fighting stance. I can see the merits of a proper honorable fighting usefulness, but I also can see an equitable mechanism for seriously reducing or almost eliminating the need for fighting and the benefits it can bring as well.

I think we all knew the result of this poll ahead of time. While it's been up, we've had one thread about Cooke getting his face caved in and another entitled tOfficial "I like watching guys get punched in the face" thread.

Not one thread about kittens and no threads entitled "I like nice hockey plays and cute fluffy stuff."

I believe one can dislike fighting in hockey and threads about kittens. These are not mutally exclusive tastes.

I voted 'meh'. I enjoy a good fight every now and then, but I couldn't really care less if it was gone or not. But, just to play devil's advocate, for the people that said it's the players' health, so it should be up to them to decide, how does the healthcare in the NHL work? Don't the NHLPA have a fund or something that goes to players that are injured? I could be mistaken, but I thought some of the money from when players are fined and stuff go to this fund. If so, is it fair then to the rest of the league if a player gets injured when fighting? I suppose the players as a whole could ban fighting if they didn't want it for said reason, but I'm just curious to hear thoughts on this, or to be corrected if I'm misinformed.

How about this. Any time during the play, if a player's helmet comes off, he has to go to the bench or put it on before he can play the puck. If during a fight, a helmet comes off, the refs step in/ penalty/ becomes part of "the code".

That should cut back on some head injuries and keep fighting in the game.

I could live without seeing any fights, but sometimes players take liberaties on smaller players, it helps keep some of the guy honest.

But being a Wings fan at least the last few years fighting is somewhat rare. But I can't say I don't occationally pull up the film of Osgood vs, Roy. :D

Those are Olympic rules, and, believe it or not, I actually saw it happen to a poor soul last time. Guy lost his helmet in the corner, had to go back to get it, left someone wide open who then scored, guy who lost his helmet was practically in tears. I don't like the rule.

I voted to keep fighting. This is a physical sport and it's also an emotional sport. Fighting is an extension of both of those facts. The sport has been played this way since before most of us were even born and it is just one of MANY reasons why hockey is unique. I don't want the sport I love to turn into a watered down version of itself. We are already suffering through that with the shootout, which as far as I can tell, is not that popular with most traditional hockey fans. I don't care whether it is a necessary evil or not, it's part of the game and as fans of the game it is in fact our responsibility to be vocal about keeping at least some of the oldest traditions of the sport in tact. I don't like when people post that it isn't up to us. Yes it fucking is! This league does not exist without it's fans. I for one like the product as it is sold to me right now and I don't want the wussified version of it.
