I've played hockey for 17 years and I've never "needed" a fight by a goon to get me riled up to play. It's hockey, not boxing. You need to be able to play the game and understand it.

End Thread.
Really? what levels of hockey have you played? because when one of your teammates gets in a dandy of a tilt, there is most definitely a surge on the bench.

also, you can never call your own 'thread' :D
Well if theres bad blood... Then a fight off the face off is justified. Theres always an "if".
odd thing about hockey fights.... it rarely ever leaves the ice.

THIS^^^^^

The choreographed, drop the gloves right after the opening whistle bullshit of goons "getting their teams pumped up" needs to go the way of the Dinosaur as that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. I've played hockey for 17 years and I've never "needed" a fight by a goon to get me riled up to play. It's hockey, not boxing. You need to be able to play the game and understand it.

That said, you eliminate fighting, and you get a bunch of Steve Ott, Corey Perry, Matt Cooke, Daniel Carcillo, and Steve Avery's running around with no price to pay. However, since I've played for 17 years, I also understand that their needs to be fighting allowed. Plays escalate and become more dangerous when two players who hate each other can't fight. That's when sticks get up and boarding calls go up and hits from behind. If people can't fight, they'll resort to other ways of exacting their revenge/justice.

End Thread.

^^^^this.
Legitimate fights play a legitimate role in the game.Health wise more injuries and serious injuries come from the general contact of the game and dirty play that result in the fights anyway.Fighting has been a part of the nhl from the start it is a part of the sport and has rules in place that support that.Fighting also played a part in building the sport to what it is I think there's a pretty big reason the nhl is the league when it comes to hockey and that's the over all product. When you make a change in anything there is always going to be a trickle down effect and removing the fights that occur for the right reasons could prove to be more harmful in the end.

Traveling teams in high school (played a time or two up in Whistler.....I need to get back there :)) and club level in college. Nothing special, but enough to have been in my fair share of fights. What are we talking about here though Puck? You've gotten pumped up when two goons choreograph a fight before anything has even happened??? I used to laugh to myself and thought, "well, he's served his purpose for the game". Of course a good tilt between a teammate can get the blood flowing and the emotion running. Hell, I was in probably 50 fights in my "competitive" playing days.....not so much anymore in my beer leagues ;). I love it when a guy who usually never fights sticks up for himself. I can honestly tell you though that a choreographed goon fight has never done anything for me whether it be a game I'm playing in or a game I'm watching on TV.

About calling my own thread.....I'm a Sharks fan.....I'm cocky in March :D

I think we all knew the result of this poll ahead of time. While it's been up, we've had one thread about Cooke getting his face caved in and another entitled tOfficial "I like watching guys get punched in the face" thread.

Not one thread about kittens and no threads entitled "I like nice hockey plays and cute fluffy stuff."
I'm going to play devils advocate here and say that the extra threads created are possibly due to "running scared" from a sense of losing the argument from a logical perspective. ;) :D :p

Im just trying to get a handle on this because Im not an expert of the levels or tiers of organizations in USA hockey

what teams did you play in whistler (ie what tier/level/age group in Cdn hockey?) was it midget? was it junior A? B?

and for your university club hockey ... was it full face mask like the rest of NCAA

like I posted in another thread ... we keep talking about our experiences playing hockey whether its from growing up to playing college but i really dont think we can compare them to CHL or NHL hockey where fighting is allowed.

imo they are just totally different animals

yeah, fair enough... two designated goons doing their duty on command has a much lesser effect.

I like brawls and everyone going bonkers, but I guess I'm just old school like that. If they removed fighting I would stop watching hockey. It would become like the NBA...And we all know how tough NBA players are.

Never played seasons up there, just tourneys. Got our asses handed to us every time. :D

It was bantam.

University was definitely full face mask. Think division III level though. When I said I was nothing special, I meant it. ;)

I would never state that my experience is ANYWHERE close to CHL or NHL. And I agree, they are completely different animals. All I'm saying is, from "my experience in playing hockey", I seriously think that fighting should be allowed and would be really bummed out if .

The Devils already have three advocates in this thread. If you want to take the stance of anti fighting or running scared the position of Rangers advocate is available. :D

Fighting = tough.

Got it.

This whole time I thought That going to the front of the net every shift and getting skewered like a Lamb in Greece was tough. Laying a good clean open ice hit. Diving in front of a 100mph slapshot. Coming down the boards knowing thou are going to get crunched.

Nope.

Its all about throwing haymakers until someone lands one.

Who knew.

I have done all of these things, and fighting is not very high on the "tough" list.

Those are all tough and show a ton of courage. Sometimes even moreso than fighting itself.....that said, what's that got to do with a "pro" stance for fighting???

I don't think those that want fighting out of the game are "soft". I just think that those people need to think about some of the repercussions and some of the ancillary effects of the game will change if fighting is eliminated.

BTW, no need to go Shakespeare on us :D

Fighting in hockey isn't about being tough. It's about showing guys that like to take runs at your teammates that they are NOT tough.

Isn't this thread right here an extra thread about fighting that came from another thread? So I guess I lost an argument to somebody who lost an argument in the same fashion to somebody else, who lost to somebody, who lost to the person who originally created a thread about fighting?

What about the goons who challenge other guys to fights for laying clean hits?

Wouldn't you say that those goons just look even more like ass-clowns?

Yes.

Taking runs at people is not laying a clean hit.

I've always said I hate guys fighting over a clean hit. Nothing has changed that.
