PP, I'm sorry to disagree, but Bourdon should have held up on that one. I do think he had possession of the puck or at least enough proximity to make him a valid checking target, but you can't get somebody from behind like that. Bourdon didn't charge him, but he still had enough time to pull out a rulebook, look up the section on boarding, and check and see if it'd be a legal hit before getting Gerbe. I don't want to see people start abusing the rules, but this wasn't abuse. Gerbe saw where Bourdon was - namely, far enough away to pull up - and then focused on the puck. Nothing wrong with that. Bourdon needs to ease up. Still hit the guy enough to neutralize him on the play, but you don't have to hit him in such a way that risks injury. If it was a bad call, it was only a bad call because they didn't call a double minor (it wasn't a major, don't get crazy here, Sabre fans).

And I will defend this no matter who it happens to. This isn't being a homer (though 100% of you will not believe me). I hate that players think it is safe to turn their backs to an oncoming player.

Yes, the league is putting the onus on the oncoming player more often than not, but players need to learn to protect themselves and embrace an oncoming hit. Stop assuming guys will not hit you because you decide to show them your numbers. Shit happens.

Playing hockey growing up, I fear having my back to the play at all times. It is much less scary taking on a hard check compared to turning around and not knowing what to expect. It's just something you don't do and every coach will tell you that.

I certainly thought that Marc-Andre Bourdon's boarding violation against Buffalo's Nathan Gerbe was the more egregious of the two incidents in last night's game, but apparently the NHL disagrees. The league announced that Ville Leino will face a disciplinary hearing today for his elbow to the head of Matt Read, but it doesn't appear that Bourdon is in line behind him.

Leino was certainly in the wrong, and given that he made contact with Read's head, a suspension is certainly worthy. I'm just shocked that Bourdon doesn't appear headed for the same fate. Not that I mind, though, considering Matt Walker gets in the lineup if Bourdon has to sit...

Ville Leino will face hearing for elbow; Marc-Andre Bourdon, not? - Broad Street Hockey

And that is from a website that is all about the Flyers.

Some of the comments below are :L but that's what happens when some fans think they know the game better than anyone else.

And Bourdon knew he was going to get it for a hit like that as well. I mean he clearly saw Gerbe's name and number on the back of his jersey, and players know they can't make a hit like that from behind. Like I said, I'm surprised that Bourdon got nothing for it, considering how the NHL wants to crack down on hits like that, but life moves on. Not everyone is going to see eye to eye on everything.

Not to stir the pot, but I strongly believe for the reasons I stated above that this was probably looked at and not deemed malicious based on the fact Gerbe shifted in a way to put himself in harms way after observing impending contact.

"Gerbe certainly embellished" :L

"I conclude he wasn’t healthy before the start. Because that hit wasn’t the concussing type." :L

"oh god lindy is gonna throw a tantrum" - Well no shit

Jeez, Leino, if you're going to throw a high speed elbow into someone's dome the least you can do is knock out a tooth. A strong breeze would have done more damage.
