The Mamba deserves it for all he has done for this franchise. It will be a sad sad day when he retires :(

Essentially, they have bought out his contract. I think he may be considering retirement but it is indeed going to be kept very secret. I think he sees all of this youth and speed and I believe from what I am hearing in LA that Kobe may be thinking about calling it a career.

Just the other day on Access sports net Lakers interview with Kobe...he said he will stay play beyond this season & is not sure when he will retire, but so far his recovery is going well. He just needs to heal right & just keep getting stronger.

The payment is a previously negotiated balloon payment that settles the contract with remaindered to be paid out of the season. That figure is somewhere in the neighborhood of $6.1 mil and sends an assurance message that Kobe will negotiate the remainder of his playing years in good faith.

Essentially, there is a good chance he'll have to re-up for far less money because the Lakers would be completely nuts to sign him for more than $30 mil since that is at the 80% max mark under the new CBA. Plus, he is not going to garner numbers from any other club north of $30 mil, so the Lakers are banking on his expressed sentiment that he wants to remain a Laker until he retires.

Kobe has made almost a 1/2-billion dollars just in salary alone over his career. Woozers! I really do think he'll take whatever necessary paycut to allow the front office to hit free agency hard.

Damn!! $24 million. Why couldn't I have been born with great basketball talent instead of devastating good looks? :becky:

Kobe has been getting 80 percent of his salary on November 1 for his last few contracts. Those balloon payments don't exist in new CBA

Even with that balloon payment, Kobe's game day checks will still be ridiculous.
