They will get good compensation for Hop. He is aging and has had some injury issues. This is the time to trade him.
The problem is that the people tasked with replacing him through the draft have been poor in that regard.

Trading Kyler Murray next year would trigger massive, but manageable, cap charge

I think it's time to get back to this discussion. The Cardinals made a stupid decision back in the 2022 offseason to extend Murray but there is a way out. Now that way out is still going to cost the Cardinals a ton of money owed to Murray. They could very well end up with 2 top picks in the 2024 draft, maybe even 1 & 2 which is pretty insane.

If they get the #1 pick they will have no choice but to trade or cut Murray and just take the cap hit(s) in upcoming years. If they picked Caleb this would be the 3rd QB they picked in the top 10 since 2018.

What team is taking these future cap hits though?

YEARCAP HIT
2024$38,850,000
2025$32,607,500
2026$42,542,500
2027$36,335,000
2028$46,350,000

The issue isn't how much Murray is being paid each year. The issue is that if a team wants to move on from Murray they would be on the hook not only for the current year but for most of the following year's money. Thus, if a team gets Murray in March 2024 but then decides to move on after 2025 they'll be on the hook for the $71M+ for 2 season but also most of the $42M+ for 2026.

There are multiple ways to agree deals and draw up contracts. Normally teams pay move in advance and guarantee up to 3 years salary. If the player plays well and stays healthy it works out well for the team. If the player suffers an immediate catastrophic injury or otherwise becomes useless, (QB Smith in Washington), then the deal is a disaster. The Cardinals wrote the contract so they were guaranteed to avoid a disaster and not pay out money early. However they were also guaranteed to be in a negative equity situation if and when they moved on from Murray. Either they cut him and eat $30M+ of his future salary or they pay another team draft capital for them to take on that responsibility.

(Guestimated values): Murray without the bad future guarantees might be worth pick #82. However the liability might be #36 the other way. The net effect might be the Cardinals having to give up pick #54 for another team to take Murray. I'm sure they'd want the acquiring team to give up Draft compensation, and maybe there's a bad GM out there that will accommodate them.

I would think any team that would consider a trade would either want Kyler to be willing to restructure like Rodgers did or the Cardinals to eat some of the cost. Having said that, they will find a way to make it work because they honestly are very likely to have the #1 pick and either the #2 or #3 pick overall. They will move on from Murray, whatever the cost, imo.
