Crazy. Yeah, there was some off the court stuff that's not worth getting into right now but the guy was an amazing baller. I remember when the W's drafted Curry and I was like "yeah, he's a great player but who's going to guard Kobe?" (monta was also in the backcourt at that point). Thing I respected about him is that he played his best when people started badmouthing him for being so selfish (remember right after that one guy on ESPN said the lakers don't run the triange, they run the I-angle and he went off on that ridiculous 50+ point streak immediately after). Feel worse about the daughter and the other young girl (if the reporting I heard was right). There's a couple of kids that didn't even have a chance for a life.

I just saw this on TMZ, was hoping it was BS, but TMZ usually isn't BS... I hope this isn't true...

Saw it on twitter first and saw and image of Jay Williams on ESPN and the headline Kobe dead at 41. Thought it was a sick photoshop.

Crazy that this actually happened. Kobe seemed like he had a lot of good things ahead of him in life and seemed like an excellent father. Sad that he and his daughter died, plus he just had a baby. Such a shame.

It actually is when death is involved. You know how many times the local news here in NYC/NJ doesn't name a person who died because the family wasn't informed yet?
All of time here, .Its the way its supposed to be

I remember taking my first helicopter ride in VietNam. When it banked to the right with the doors opened, I thought I would shit my pants.

My very 1st helicopter ride was back in '75 while stationed in the Philippines at Clark AFB, over to Subic Bay Naval Base, and the 2nd ride was the return trip back to Clark 3 days later.

We know the pilot contacted the control tower at Burbank Airport around 9:30 AM PT, and the tower was aware the pilot had been circling for about 15 minutes. The pilot eventually headed north along the 118 freeway before turning to the west, and started following above the 101 freeway around Woodland Hills, CA.

At around 9:40 AM they encounter more weather -- as in seriously heavy fog -- and the chopper turned south. This was critical, because they turned toward a mountainous area. The pilot suddenly and rapidly climbed from about 1200 feet up to 2000 feet.

However, moments later -- around 9:45 AM -- they flew into a mountain at 1700 feet. Flight tracker data shows they were flying at about 161 knots.

One of the greatest sports figures whether you rooted for him or against him. He made it fun either way. So much passion for the game and one of the smartest to ever play. He wasn't a great shooter, but still a great scorer. His footwork was flawless.

I wonder about helicopter safety now. Seems like a lot of news stories about crashes, but I'm probably overstating it. The owner of an English soccer team died in a helicopter crash about a year ago.

I really, really hope this is how it happened. If so, the lights just went out instead of a loss of gyro and a solid minute of spinning and screaming and begging.

This whole thing is a mindfuck.
