The LA County Sheriff just said that there were 9 people on the helicopter.

This is going to get a whole lot worse.

Shocked to hear the news this morning. Truly sad day. He was the era's Michael Jordan. I remember him killing the awful Warriors teams during that period. But when he played his last game at Oracle he received a loud ovation from the fans.

He was the coach of his 13-year-old daughter's basketball team and one of her best friends and team mate was on the helicopter. The helicopter was Kobe's but they haven't said if he was the pilot. He did have a license and was night qualified. From what we've heard back here in the east, they were flying to a scheduled game and the fog came in very fast. No word if there was a mechanical problem or if there was a radio distress call.

I hated him when he played against the Celtics but watched him whenever I could against anyone else.

So sorry for your family and friends and for the girls that you took the time to help them play basketball. For any life to end at 41 is a tragedy.

Based on the little info out there, it looks like it may have been mechanical. A couple of witnesses said they saw a helicopter flying lower than it should have been and they could hear the engine sputtering.

Plus, apparently this particular helicopter could fly solely off of the instruments.
