...by being selfish and doing a deal to take less money. What a stand up guy. Fuck waiting on the official ceremony. I say we start calling him St Kirk of Unselfishness right now damn it!

Kirk Cousins Doesn't Want to Hurt QB Market With Next Deal

“Secondly, there’s other quarterbacks that come after you and it would be almost a selfish move to hurt future quarterbacks who get in a position to have a contract,” he continued. “And if you don’t take a deal that’s fair to you, then you’re also taking a deal that’s not fair to them and you’re setting them back as well. So there’s different reasons. You just do the best you can.”

I can't front and I gotta give it to Kirk. Didn't think he had it in him, but that's a unanimous 1st ballot entry into the Hall of Fame of Bullshit right there.

I love it! I'll bet no GM in the league has ever had to counter that negotiating strategy! I didn't want to take the money, but I felt I owed it to my peers. Beautiful!

Seriously... you going to hate on the man because he isnt willing to take a low ball offer?? He hasnt come out and said I want to be the highest paid QB ever, just a fair market deal. If you know the going rate for your line of work was $200k a year, would you take a job paying $125k because your boss felt you were only worth that much, but the company across the street was willing to pay you the $200k and maybe more??

It is beautiful in its simplicity no doubt.

Scotty Mac should ask him, "So you'd rather fuck the team and the fans instead?"

OK maybe not hate, but considering your mood as of late, one could wonder the tone this was meant to convey.

I have never bought into that aw shucks bullshit persona. Said so a year ago and like clockwork his defenders came gushing out. One of the funnier things that a couple of them wrote, was that he was the "ultimate team guy" and because of that they would not be surprised if he took a "hometown discounted contract" (note the quotes) . I tell you man, some of the most entertaining moments on boards like this come after some posters use the word, because!!

Would that make him the first QB in DC to put on a Bullshit act to win over the fans??

Why limit it to DC? Football isn't the only thing that this league and it's employees are selling. They go to great lengths to minimize negative shit and further lengths to accentuate the wholesome all American bullshit. So, a direct answer to your specific DC question....NOPE, just the latest.

This is actually very common. Years ago I heard a baseball closer say the same thing. They know contracts set the market for future deals so they feel a responsibility to their fellow players.

The players union also lean on these guys to get the best deal possible to improve pay across the board.

That comment is rt up there with this one from Latrell Sprewell years ago when he was in a similar situation:

Sprewell said: ''Why would I want to help them win a title? They're not doing anything for me. I'm at risk. I have a lot of risk here. I got my family to feed.'' Sprewell is due to make $14.6 million this year. Sprewell, 34, described the team's latest offer, reported to be worth between $27 million and $30 million over three years, as ''insulting.''

Of course Sprewell went broke years later after making over $100M in his career.
