Well, jstew, it is interesting to note that a young Jarome Iginla held out for most of training camp back in the fall of '99 wanting a big raise on a new contract. Jarome's agent at the time: one Don Meehan.

Sure that it's not on Lambo? I don't really agree with the whole "we won't pay you more than Kopitar" angle. Doughty's more valuable, especially since they have Richards now.

I am not saying Drew and DL are blameless. I am saying that this agent has a history of dealings like this. DLhas to set a limit. If Kopitars cap hit needed to be the number is up for debate. However 6.8 is nothing to sneeze at. It would make DD the 5th highest Dman. Istill don't think money is the real issue here. I think Drew wants 5 years @ 7mil and the Kings want 7 years @6.8 mil.

It may also be egos. DL has had trouble with Meehan before as have the Kings (see kopitar)

People have suggested that Meehan is trying to set an example for the new CBA. He may be worried about an RFA cap. I don't think that will happen.

All this being said I still think Drew plays by the Vegas game.

I can agree with that. As much as it's been suggested in the past, the elephant in the room seems to be the Weber contract. If we base Doughty's play vs. Weber's, then I agree with the 6.8m... or just under. If it's based on Doughty vs. Kopitar, I think he deserves greater than 6.8. Let's just say the total years will be 6 to keep it fair.

Lombardi: If he led with his best offer, that was certainly a gesture of good faith, but perhaps it was a mistake. Classic rule of negotiating is that you don’t start with the most you’re willing to pay; you start lower and let the other guy bargain you up. That way, you both walk away feeling like you’ve accomplished something. I wonder if Meehan assumed (and still assumes) that Dean is just being an asshole by reiterating, “that’s our best offer” because in his mind, that can’t possibly be. What kind of chump leads with his best offer? Or he may think that he senses weakness in Dean’s eagerness to get the deal done, and if he just holds out a little while longer, Dean will crack.

Doughty: Should he be in control of this process? Yes. Is he in control of this process? I think it’s naive to believe that he has full control of where things are going. He’s a young guy faced with the task of signing his first real (i.e., non-ELC) NHL contract. The stakes are high. He may only sign 2 or 3 of these contracts in his entire career. You think he’s not going to rely heavily on the advice of a high-powered agent whom he hired to guide him through the process? My guess is that Drew keeps asking Meehan, “When are going to get this done so I can play hockey?” And Meehan keeps telling him, “Trust me, I know what I’m doing.” And Drew trusts him because he hired him. And unfortunately, he’ll probably keep trusting him until Meehan starts dragging him over the cliff.

Should Drew take charge and either give Meehan marching orders, or just fire him? Yes. But I understand why he won’t. He’s a kid who hired a grown-up to take care of stuff that’s over his head. It’s tough to then fire the grown-up in that situation when he has credentials like Meehan’s got.

Meehan: His interests and the client’s interests are not the same. It seems when you get to Meehan’s level sometimes your interests involve sacrificing your client just to make yourself look tough. Do I blame Meehan? Yes and no. He’s acting in his self-interest. He’s doing what he does. It would be like blaming a parasite for sucking the blood of its host. That’s what parasites do; what do you expect? Meehan is simply playing his role in a system that allows him to carve out a niche as a fucking parasite.

I think Drew Meehan is wanting Weber/Stamkos money. The Kopitar thing I understand. Kopi signed when the team had nothing. No forwards, no defense and no goalies. He was the only quuality player on the team and the team needed to make a statement to the players and the fans. Also Kopitar agreed to dump Meehan as an agent and he was almost in Frees spot. The team had no idea what was down the road and needed a franchise player.

Now Drew is most likely going to be that player but Kopitar has lived up to his end of the deal. I think the team does not want to pay Drew more than Kopitar because they feel Kopitar still deserves the respect of being the #1 guy.

I think this is about term. Drew and Meehan want a shorter deal in the hope that in 5 years Drew will get money that makes this deal look like pocket lint.

I'm just glad the Sabres inked Myers before the Kings inked DD.

I disagree. A first line top tier center is worth more than any defenseman. They're harder to find. Doughty shouldn't make more money than Kopitar.

Besides the Kings have plenty of D prospects in their system. Are they as good as Doughty right now? No. However, Voynov, Hickey, & Muzzin are solid.
