I just dislike this all around. The contract is either valid or it isn't. Quoting Bob:

"A negotiated settlement makes sense for both parties. If it goes to arbitration, the arbitrator would rule in favor of one party or the other. So the Kings would either be free and clear of Richards' contract or they would be fully on the hook for the balance of the deal. Likewise, Richards would end up with either nothing or everything he's owed. So there's considerable risk for both sides in an arbitration."

Otherwise known as the same fucking rules everybody else has to play by. If we're opening contracts to negotiated settlements now, why can't the Flyers negotiate their way out of Vinny or Macdonald's deals? What's stopping the Jackets from trying to negotiate a buyout with Clarkson after the play him for 10 games and realize he's a donkey's ass on skates?

Concerns about water bottle safety and security?

Find me one other guy - just one - that'll jump over the boards during a preseason fight and get his ass kicked by John Scott! I dare ya!

Does it have to be a hockey player? Because I feel like the stands are probably full of people that are like this once they get a few in em

I think this guys would be up for it. Or at least he was at one time.

Might be a better player than Clarkson too. Probably wouldn't even need to spring for skates for the guy.

Kings GM Dean Lombardi emotionally tells of Mike Richards' 'destructive spiral'

What a piece of shite. Lombardi acting the victim and pretending like this is anything other than fixing his mistake of not using an amnesty buyout on Richards. He directly discusses how his play took a nose dive, and has discussed in the recent past that he regrets not buying him out. Just...come on. This was a "tragedy" of your career? This? So, you cutting a guy out from his contract/money owed because of freaking oxys is you responding to being lied to? How'd you feel when you found out Slava was guilty? Obviously not too bad, considering you let him fucking practice in your facilities. It took Voynov (who's crime had an actual victim) getting deported for you to finally give up on him, for now. But the second you got wind of Richards having a problem, he's gone. Stop, Dean. No one is buying this steaming pile of poo. I understand the crass sentiment that winning is above all, and that the sport is a business, but stop acting like some martyr who tried to save this guy for so long. No. You're circumventing the cap.

I agree completely, Pix. I don't understand how a contract can be negotiated out of based on a small drug charge with a token cap penalty the only repercussion. I'm sure other GMs are now asking the league why they can't negotiate buyouts for their bad deals but Lombardi can.

Kings should lose a couple of draft picks over this as well. Preferably their first rounder next year. Which looks like it might be a high pick with the way the team has looked so far. No way do the Kings deserve Auston.

This sets a bad precedent. If I was a GM with an albatross of a contract, I'd hire an outside "service" to plant some dirt on my player I wanted to get rid of. In fact, I'd probably have this individual on my payroll.

I liked pix's post above mainly for the phrase "steaming pile of poo"

Nailed it. The precedent here is very scary. Ultimately though, who does this piss off? NHLPA is probably happy their guy got paid, and if the cap penalty is smaller, more money goes to some other player. NHL probably just wants it to go away. Other NHL GMs may be mad this is allowed, but then again there's a precedent now that gives them some wiggle room.

On a wholly unrelated note, did you guys hear Rob Scuderi enjoys amphetamines? I did. I heard it. Yep.

A quick google search reveals that Mike Richards was doing stand up and called a black guy the N-word repeatedly. Not good if true

Sorry, couldn't resist :D

I'm not going to wade through 7 pages.

Did anyone respond with, "That would be doing things the white way" ?

But what about circumventing the spirit of the salary cap?
If your team had tried this you are all a bunch of cheaters. Since it was my team Kings shouldn't have any cap hit.

Still don't know the numbers on this. Some reporters are guessing half a mil a year over 16 years.
Even if it is a mil a year , it would be less a year, just longer time frame then a buyout
We still don't know what the breach actually was.
I have thoughts, really just musings, but I am almost always wrong.

1. Richards’ next court date is Dec. 8, so his future remains unclear. But he is an unrestricted free agent, and there is interest. He doesn’t turn 31 until February and it was his contract — not his play — that prevented other clubs from taking him. It’s believed the Kings were offering two or three prospects (Jordan Weal likely among them) to the Calgary Flames and/or Edmonton Oilers as incentive to acquire him before the arrest. Richards will have suitors should the time come.

Was going to drop this in the 30 Thoughts thread, but it works here as well.
