What would be your answer to this? I don't mean some pron BS, I mean a REAL game...Myself? I have ALWAYS wanted to see a solid US Civil War game(not just strategy based). There is so much potential there, especially if they used a type of character switching. You could be a General(to plot strategy if you want), Scout, Sniper, Cannonier, Medic, Foot soldier, or anything else in between you wanted on the batterfield on the fly.

I could see a game exactly like Vakyria Chronicles based in the real US Civil War being fairly good but generally video games have more escalation. You can cover a narrative and have a lot of other things going on but 'shoot, bayonet or run' might be a bit underwhelming in the gameplay department.

To follow up on this thought process, I want to see games, where there's different scopes of play. So in your example, you're the general who plots out strategy, (ie: civilization) then you drop down into the squad view to plot out tactics (ie: x-com), and then you jump into the body of a soldier (ie: any first person shooter)

With speed and memory improvements, a game like that would be do-able, it would just be really expensive to make, and would likely cost a lot more.

But a game like that could also easily bring you 300 hours of gameplay. That would be worth $150 = 200 imo.

Funny... When I read the question I thought EXACTLY the same thing.

(Same era, same type of game, etc...).

I would like it where you don't have to control all aspects if you don't want to... (IE. The AI will make the decisions at the Army, Corps, Division, Brigade and Regimental levels if you'd prefer to just be a foot soldier).

I think it would be neat to have a game like this where you start as a private and work your way up the promotional ladder too...

But of course, you would have the ability to play the game from any level of control you want to assume... If you want to be Chamberlain and only be in charge of the 20th Maine? Have at it. (Or any other regiment you might choose.).

Yes, it would be a whale of a task, but I think it would be doable.

This would also be cool with the 8th Air Force with B-17s...

Probably easier too... Some games have tried, but not succeeded IMO..

Sometimes I don't want to fly the damn plane. I just want the responsibilities of the Engineer or Tail Gunner..

I always wanted a football game that actually simulated football. Have one player character and level him up by practicing and playing the game. Then go online with 21 other people after making a team and have the whole thing play out where you have to play the same position for the whole game and rely on teammates the whole game. You would have to make the gameplay super complex to keep things interesting but in order to beat your guy in football, it does take a lot of super complex behavior. Have the whole thing in a zoomed in third person perspective from your character so you can see just enough to do complex things and have some peripheral vision of sorts.

That would be cool as hell!!! but I just wonder how many would want to play(for example) o-line?

You'd have to make it interesting. Give olineman moves and complex motions based on how you build your character and how you train them. If you make it skill based then it could be something you could become famous at playing so that would motivate people. Being the best All Pro guard in a made up online league would be easy to set up and if you play well enough then you can try to get recruited to better teams. You could also have multiple characters to try and level up a different person at a different position. With everyone mic'd up, you wouldn't need a head coach. You could just have the QB or a member of the defense calling plays.

I can just imagine the behavior via headset or message in a game like that. The mind boggles.

I do like that idea, and it's scope would be massive but imagine how you could push it on if it succeeded. Imagine a follow up doing WWII. Control the entire strategy, then controlling a fleet of ships or air wing or entire ground battle. Then going to the first person. Tank commander, Uboat commander, soldier, pilot... that would be massive.

One I'd like to see...

Hunger games video game.. Make about 2-4 hour playthrough each time, You build your character, pick your district (each has different benefits), spend training points ahead of time in different skills (build a weapon skill, spend the points on making allies, spend them on camouflage, on strength or stamina, etc), and go for a few "days" where you have to fight, defend, hide, earn gifts, try and build allies (who may turn at any moment depending how things are going, you can also choose to turn first), find safe places to sleep, survive different weather/animals the game creators throw out. AI constantly battling each other too behind the scenes, can pause and view fatality moments (check out how they kill each other off and even watch the game to it's conclusion on multiple cams if you die.

Dang, the topic of Civil War games reminds me of the strategy on Sid Meier's Gettysburg. I think I played that game more than any other game growing up.

A real video game based on the game Stratego would be awesome. It would fit in with the war time aspect by using real wars and names.

Yes, I played that too and would definitely like that kind of strategy involved, but ONLY if you wanted to. I wouldn't make it necessary since for some that would be WAY too intimidating/boring to figure out...

As to your question... I really don't know.

I did like your expansion on the idea. And if it were to come to fruition, I'd be on the waiting list to buy.

Another game I've always wanted, is one that REALLY recreates Las Vegas(Strip, Downtown and everything in between). I mean even INSIDE the hotels. You could "gamble" at any hotel you wanted(this is where the monetizing would be)... They would not play for real money(or maybe they would), you'd pay like $5(real money) for like $1000 in chips at each Casino. You could buy chips at any or all the Casinos you want. You could go to "shows"(short clips of the real shows), go on a Gondola ride at the Venetian, ride the High Roller, just walk around, etc...

Reminds me of the old Golden Nugget game. It was a game we had for the family computer when I was a kid. Years later I played the story mode only to find that TVs Batman, Adam West starred in it. That was an awesome/hilarious surprise.

A Superman game GTA style.

Like a better version of the Spiderman 2 video game in the mid 2000s.

I think a civil war FPS would be great. I've always wanted a major FPS/mmorpg that was actually good. Like what Destiny or the Division should have been. I've always wanted a game like World of Warcraft but in FPS form with military equipment instead of medieval stuff. I want a game with multiple lands, multiple classes, good and bad classes that start in different places and camps throughout the world where you can buy/sell/trade/learn skills and go out on quests in that world. I want it to be so massive that it has the longevity of WoW and the desire to keep playing to get that 1 in a million weapon that some boss drops after some crazy sequence of quests. That would be great, unfortunately games that it would have worked well in - like Destiny - fail to provide.

but I also agree that a civil war game would be awesome. Though it might be a little harder to execute because the style of war was much different.
