Little known MVD team keeps surprising.
Trailing 0:2 to established KHL powerhouse AK Bars, they won 3 games in a row and now are only a win away from KHL main prize. All this on a tiny budget, without big names on the roster and in the midst of possible merger with failing Dynamo.

Michael Garnett (former Thrasher) is playing big in goal for them.
The other somewhat familiar names are:
- Matt Ellison (43 NHL games for Blackhawks and Flyers
- Martin Štrbák (49 games for Pens and Kings)
- Filip Novák (17 games for Sens and Columbus)
- Pavel Vorobiev (57 games for Chicago)
- Andrei Skopintsev (40 games for Tampa and Atlanta)
- Alexei Kudashov (25 games for Toronto)

------------ threadjack alert ---------

prospects update - do any of these names sound familiar?
I think Sergei Shirokov was our primary Russian prospect and he's in Winnipeg now, but there area few in the system that I don't know much about:

Kiril Koltsov - I recall he had promise a few years ago, but haven't heard much since.
Ilja Kablukov
Ilia Krikunov
Sergei Topol

thanks

Of all 4 only Kablukov can still be called a prospect. He is only 22, but was pretty unimpressive this season playing for Spartak. Only 5 goals, none in play-off.

Koltsov, while very talented, is still a headcase. He played for Salavat Ulaev and managed to get in war with head coach Bykov (who also doubles as Russian national team coach). Dumb idea. Spent most of play-off in doghouse and is about to move to Avangard Omsk. At 27 can't really be considered as NHL prospect.

Topol, 25, just played his first KHL season with Mettalurg Novokuznetsk. Scored 3 goals in 22 games, his team didn't make play-off.

Krikunov, 26, played 55 games for Torpedo, scored 9 goals.

I'd say, none of them stand a chance to play in NHL.

Quite good in 'Fiddler on The Roof' though

thanks very much. They had all kind of disappeared off the radar from out here.
I am glad you are posting here more frequently than you were on t'other board.

I found it difficult to post on Mickey Mouse board. For some reason it worked so sloooooooooooooow for me.
This forum is such a tremendous improvement in both speed and functionality!

Where is Kiril Kabonov playing these days? Did he make it into the KHL?
I think he is not welcome in Russia. The amount of talent he brings does not compensate for headaches he instills on everyone involved.
He is still listed at Moncton, but is not planning to return to juniors. He said he will try to get into NHL (how? he is not even drafted yet) and if it fails will play in AHL.

Thanks for the update and the prospect info.

I actually remember Martin Štrbák. I know it was during the dark years that he played for the Pens...not sure when exactly...04ish maybe?

Anyway, good stuff.

I remember him playing for Pens too. It was 2003/04 like you said. Pretty bad team on a brink of bancruptcy. They couldn't resign Jagr, had to trade Kasparaitis, Kovalev, Straka just to meet ends, Lemieux played only a few games, Morozov went back to Russia after the season.
Tarnstrom was their best scorer (ouch). I think Orpik and MAF are the only ones still with the team.
But they got few high draft picks out of it and used them wise. What a difference few years can make!
