Forget stats - in the first half of last season the Redskins defense just flat out stunk. During the second half of the season they were a bit better but a part of that was the competition (Giants w/ Eli, Romo-less Cowboys, injury riddled Falcons, etc). I truly believe that the biggest problem was the lack of a consistent pass rush and not the secondary.

I have high hopes that they will get better at least to a degree this season & certainly better STs & a better offense will help.

Other than the health of QB last year my biggest problem with this team was special teams by a mile!! They hamstrung the D all year. I think the D was put in shitty situations and they weren't that good to begin with but IMO that's why they were as bad as they were a year ago. Improve ST and you improve your D.

I have always thought a defense being judged on total points given up by the team is a crock to a degree. If a defense ends up facing the other team five times inside their own 20, but three of those times were due to the offense or special teams hanging thme out to dry. Even if they hold the other team to a field goal each time, the defense still takes the hit for 15 points given up. If the QB throws two pick six's and the RB fumbles inside the five, the defense still gets dinged for 21 points given up. Same if ST unit gives up two return TDs. Just pointing out, a poor offense and special teams can make a defense look alot worse than it actually is.

Legit points, I agree

Yup. Special teams was terrible last year. Being out from under the Cap Penalty will give depth to that unit.

The Coaching change will help too.

Don't get me wrong. I agree that the special teams were the worst - no argument there. However - that does not also mean that either the offense or defense played that well. The defense suffered due to the special teams (as did the offense when they started out often well inside the 20) but also didn't really help themselves during most games.

Lots of room for improvement for all units. Time to start fresh & put all the crap from last season in the rear view mirror.

Big time. Hiya HBomb, nice to see ya making a visit :suds:

Gotta hedge that with the transition tho. Might not see the cohesiveness we'd like as early as we all wish. But ANYTHING is better than the train wreck that ensued at the end of Shannys fourth year :L

I've been watching BMitch and he's real excited about the Coaching change on Special Teams. Love BMitch.

Me too. Tells it like it is. No sugar coating. And everything coming out of skins media, regarding Kotwica sounds promising... My optimism is highest for this phase of the game to improve most visibly next year :hope:

socal. Fitz vs RG3. I cant see how you can not pencil that game in as a win. 2-0 start boys.

Careful. Even that guy could have a career game or even game manage & take advantage of other parts of the team doing well. I would not look past a team with Watt, Clowney, Kushing, Johnson, Foster, etc & a new coach who has done very well in past assignments.

In the NFL, a winning season IMO depends on the "Big 4". Quarterback, OL, front 7 in defense and HC. Do the Redskins have the players at QB, OL and front 7 in defense to be successful? IMO, yes they do. Look at the teams the Redskins play this year, and ask yourself this...how do the Redskins measure up with the "big 4" against these teams? IMO, it looks pretty favorable.

HC...well, that remains to be seen, and should be the difference in a winning season or one that falls below expectations.

If the "Big 3" play like I think they will, and the HC is as good as Bruce Allen and Jay's older brother think he is...I have the Redskins finishing at 10-6.

Hail to you my brothers and sisters, its good to be a Redskins fan!

looking at the defense as a hole they stunk in most categories you want to name

they were in the bottom 3 in tackling they gave up a ton of yards and the gave up a lot of points

i bet money that not every TO by the offense was in our own end and the defense gave up TDS instead of FGS

our sacks total were pedestrian our 1st and 2nd down defense was in the bottom of the nfl( lower 10 ) however our 3rd down defense was in the top 3

all of these tid bits i have posted throughout this past week

over hazmats career he has struggled to field middle of the pack defenses let alone top 10 ones . i have posted those stats as well

now i believe shanny handcuffed him but i also know our defense in long in tooth and it wasnt that good to begin with . our d/line sports 4 guys over 30 and the secondary and the secondary 3 . 5 of those start

now if clark has another year in him , great , if the rotation keeps bowen , hatcher cofield and golston fresh great , if merriweather can put another year in , great .

3 things you need as a defense is to tackle well , rush the passer and cover well . we didnt do that the past 1/2 decade

And the offense was good in every aspect except the three most important. Scoring, redzone scoring and Ball security. Special teams just sucked all the way around. Its easy to say well the defense totally sucked. And it plays into the whole idea that we were 3-13 because we just didnt have enough talent in certain areas. But as i have stated, a defense can be made to look bad even when they arent on the field. But maybe I will do the reasearch to let you know just how many times our offense and special teams left the defense hanging in the breeze. Though I doubt you will even accept that even if its presented to be true.

Shall we start with week one, where the defense handed us a 7 point lead in the first quarter, only to see the offense piss it away with three turn overs resulting in 12 points?? Or how about week two, where the offense did NOTHING until the end of the 3rd quarter? When your offense routinely does 3 and out possesions for the first half of multiple games, how much can you really expect from your defense playing on its heels from the end of the first quarter??

How much longer are you going to beat this dead horse? We get it - you pretty much believe that most of the Skins woes last season were because of RG3 & you have absolutely no hope for the guy.

As a somewhat objective fan - I see last season as being the results of all three units which includes the offense & specifically RG3. Again - I don't have a shrine for the guy in my house & believe that he needs to improve in a major way this season. However - you could say that for lots of other folks on the Skins & I have high hopes for all of the units (to at least be competitive & make us forget about last season).

Again - how about putting last season behind us & just hoping for the best for the entire team. If/when any of them fall short we can then start to badmouth those players. I choose to be a bit more optimistic so that perhaps I can enjoy the coming season.

I don't pretend to know what's going to happen. Been a fan since I was 8 (over 60 years ago). For the first time in a couple of decades I'm just going to take it one week at a time. NFC East is not a particularly strong one, so let's hope the cards fall the right way. We deserve a couple of breaks this year. In the meantime...........how 'bout them NATS?:suds:

Socal... not once in that post did I mention RG3. I simply pointed out that as much as some people want to harp on the defense and in particular the defensive coach, our 3-13 resulted more from a failing as a whole rather than just "well Haslett sucks". As far as those who will say but our offense was ranked in the top ten.... by yardage this is true. But just as I feel that a defense should not be ranked on total points scored against the team, and offense should not be considered top ten when 60% of those yards were gained in garbage time. Thats not an indictment of the QB, its of the team as a whole.
