all of these things are legit and why i have us as a 6-10 team

the defense has needed work for 1/2 a decade as has the o/line

I agree, I am thinking 6-10 or 7-9. STs should be better, I think the OL will be a little better, more weapons at on offense and hopefully improve DL and DB play.

I see the following as both good and bad:
Gruden - the team needed a new direction but he is first time HC and the team has to learn a new system
Haslett - same defense - not a new system but will it be any better than the past few years.
Robert Griffin - he is healthy but he won't be running the offense of 2012 - will he be better than last year with improved health and a new coach?

The one thing every one is writing off is the defense. And thats the one reason we are actually going to be better than expected.

I don't know how you guys can predict us to have a losing record. Best team on paper by far in the division. Obviously, you have to play the games but how do we not get off to a 2-0 start.

We come out and throw a pick six, another INT that leads to a TD, and have a fumble that also leads to a TD in week one... that ought to do it. :)

I can understand how you would think that the Jags game should be a definite win (even that though is not a gimme due to the nature of the NFL). However - it is quite another thing to be penciling in the Texans game as a win. The Texans are kind of in the same boat as the Redskins. Playoff team a few years ago that has talent & fell short last season. It would not shock me if the Texans win their division depending on their QB play.

If Watt and Clowney have huge games then it could be a long day for the Redskins in that game. That is why I caution people to not put too much stock into that game regardless of the outcome.

I actually hope that just about everyone predicts that the Redskins will be awful this year since over the last several years they appear to do just the opposite of these predictions. Making season long predictions for NFL teams is a pretty futile exercise.

the defense has alot to prove . the d/line has 4 of 6 key players over 30 and all nicked up this off season save golston

we have a huge hole at ILB with unproven players trying to fill the LBF void

we have a suspect CB situation behind amerson and the over 30 hall

we have a 35 yr old FS and a over 30 head hunter at SS and unproven BU's

add to it a DC with a mediocre career record and i would say the defense would need to earn my respect

now hazmat supporters say his was handcuffed by the HC . ok we will see and i hope the defense comes out roaring

but with our o/line , suspect qb play , and a defense on shaky ground i say we are looking at 6-10 until proven otherwise

IF we end up 6-10 it wont be because of the defense. Thats all Im saying.

And I had the audacity to call you a homer!
I think 8 wins are attainable.
Split the division. Home wins vs Jax, Tenn, Tampa, STL, and a win at Minny.

I actually think we will see greater improvement from our STs than from our D this year. Both don't have to crawl very far to do better than last year.

all i am saying is we cant be a winner without the defense taking a huge step forward

hard to win games when you know you have to score 30 just to be in the game

I see it more as if our D can take a small step forward and be a middle of the pack D myself...that would be enough for next year to really make a difference in our win percentage. If we see a decent improvement in our pass rush, it will hide a lot of potential issues in our big question mark secondary. Then again if the secondary and the pass rush both step up, we could indeed see a marked improvement from the D. Hard to know till we see it on the field. But I make no bold predictions until then. And a boost from our STs would make a huge difference as well...obviously.

As to the second comment, totally agree.

I happen to think we had an average defense that ended up in a few too many bad spots at times last year. We gave up 20 yards and 5 points a game more than the #10 defense in the league last year. So I have to ask, how many of those points given up were as a result of extremely poor field position, costly turnovers by the offense, and yes admittedly our poor secondary and tackling woes. Despite the offense doubling the number of turnovers I think our defense did enough if the Offense and Special teams held up their end of the bargain.

Can't disagree with ya there. But the end result became a bottom D, even if it may have ultimately have been average. Thus my small step forward and STs comment...

I have always thought a defense being judged on total points given up by the team is a crock to a degree. If a defense ends up facing the other team five times inside their own 20, but three of those times were due to the offense or special teams hanging thme out to dry. Even if they hold the other team to a field goal each time, the defense still takes the hit for 15 points given up. If the QB throws two pick six's and the RB fumbles inside the five, the defense still gets dinged for 21 points given up. Same if ST unit gives up two return TDs. Just pointing out, a poor offense and special teams can make a defense look alot worse than it actually is.

Forget stats - in the first half of last season the Redskins defense just flat out stunk. During the second half of the season they were a bit better but a part of that was the competition (Giants w/ Eli, Romo-less Cowboys, injury riddled Falcons, etc). I truly believe that the biggest problem was the lack of a consistent pass rush and not the secondary.

I have high hopes that they will get better at least to a degree this season & certainly better STs & a better offense will help.
