I questioned his signing with the Blues as well, but it's tough to doubt a guy's compete level after watching him do what he did in the '03 Finals.

St. Louis is a pretty good hockey town (and sports town in general). It's quite remarkable how many players make St. Louis their permanent home after their playing days are over.

im shocked and not shocked. he had a very strange career. did he ever really want to win it when he went to a very very very poor blues team (at least I remember them as being bad) he signed a 3 year $18M deal. that was pure money. not really wanting to win a cup.

I feel bad for his injuries and his shortened career which really happened 3 years ago.

Paul Kariya National Hockey League Salary History (Total = $82,686,100 )

he goes away well off for sure.

Didn't he sign a 1-year deal for the league minimum with Colorado even before there was a salary cap because he was hoping to win a Cup with Selanne among others? It didn't quite work out but its not like he's the 1st player to come along who wanted to get paid what he's perceived to be worth even if it is with a weaker team. How many contracts at league minimum was he was suppose to sign while others were cashing in all around him? For all he knew St Louis could have turned it around and become a contender during his tenure there.

yeah, he ($1.2m) and Selanne ($5.8m) took low-ish deals to try to push Col over the top.
thank vishnu that plan didn't work!

that was after five years of $10mill per with the Ducks.
Kariya's made $82mill salary in his career, fwiw.

Without a doubt, St. Louis is a great town and a great place to play, it just seemed like a weird destination for a guy who had yet to win a Cup at the time. Especially after he had just got paid by Nashville.

Oh well, I liked the guy personally. Too bad he never got his hardware.
