“The thing that I worry about,” Kariya said in an interview, “is that you’ll get a guy who is playing with a concussion, and he gets hit, and he dies at centre ice. Can you imagine what would happen to the league if a guy dies at centre ice?”

fuck you gary suter

im shocked and not shocked. he had a very strange career. did he ever really want to win it when he went to a very very very poor blues team (at least I remember them as being bad) he signed a 3 year $18M deal. that was pure money. not really wanting to win a cup.

I feel bad for his injuries and his shortened career which really happened 3 years ago.

he goes away well off for sure.

Kariya: “If you start at 10-game suspensions and go to 20, that sends a message to the players. But if you start fining the owners and suspending the coach, then it’s out of the game.... A two-game suspension? That’s not enough of a deterrent.”

Amen to that. Start getting real, NHL.

Great player and a classy, intelligent guy. He was one of my all-time favorites and it's sad to see him go. He's dead-on with his comments in that article. The NHL just doesn't give a shit.

Is it really bad if we don't find out what happens to the NHL if a guy dies at center ice?

im sure 4706 means that we wont get an answer from the NHL on Kariyas hypothetical question. not that he wants to see someone die at center.

Suter was an American.
as mattola said, he crosschecked Kariya in the head, so Kariya missed the olympics.
he did it while Kariya was celebrating a goal. fuck Gary Suter.

Suter's other career accomplishment was crosschecking Gretzky into the boards (hit from behind) in a Canada Cup tournament, which gave Gretzky back problems through the rest of his career.

fuck gary suter.

Well let's look back in time.
Dionne threatened to quit with the way the game had changed, followed by the magnificent one(Lemieux) years later.

These were 2 of the most highly profiled players of their time, and the league didn,t do a god damn thing.

Other players have spoken out,and yet with a few tweeks to the rules and suspensions given out,has the game really changed?

Kariya will just be another player to get some press over his stance, and the game will go on as usual.

Fuck Bettman,and fuck Gary Suter.

I questioned his signing with the Blues as well, but it's tough to doubt a guy's compete level after watching him do what he did in the '03 Finals.

I like to think that it has... or at least it will I hope. The Cooke suspension, and the head injuries to high profile players like Savard and Crosby in recent seasons has magnified an already hot-button issue in the sporting world at large(see nfl).

With the way social media and the press is today, there is a greater chance now that this problem simply won't just float away into obscurity as it has before in the NHL.
