I just never understood why he restructured in the first place. He did SF a favor by getting them out from under that terrible contract and cost himself millions.

It had to be that he just hated it there. Because he knew he wasn't going to start when he did it and therefore wouldn't be able to showcase himself.

It had to be that he just hated it there. Because he knew he wasn't going to start when he did it and therefore wouldn't be able to showcase himself.

His original contract was very team friendly. The only thing the restructure did was give Kap control over his staying or leaving after 2016. After 2017, there was no guaranteed money & 2017 was only guaranteed after 4/1. The team could have cut him before 4/1 under the old deal without having anything hit the cap other than a small prorated part of his signing bonus.

Basically, by doing the restructure & opting out, he gets a jump on FA before that 4/1 date when it was almost certain the Niners were going to release him.

Few 9er fans care to have Kap on the roster but even if he stayed the 9ers have a mad amount of cap space.
