I do agree that Mike Brown is the perfect owner in this case..... I think he sees some value in the idea that you can pay a qb within their first 4 years (i.e. cheap) and still win. Hell, this view was validated when Russell Wilson won a Lombardi.

He and Marvin have dug in pretty deep with Dalton and really they have nothing to lose by playing hardball. Most fans would be happy to see Mikey make Dalton walk.

My only fear is that both sides will eventually cave and agree on an 'average' deal -- Enough of a deal to keep Andy here and Mike ambivalent about signing/drafting another real threat.

Ideally any contract would be structured like the Niners/Kaepernick deal with an out after a couple years.

But here's every QB drafted in the 1st round the last 5 years..

Stafford ( #1 overall pick. inconsistent but I'd take him over Dalton because of his physical talent)
Mark Sanchez
Josh Freeman
Sam Bradford
Tim Tebow
Cam Newton (#1 overall pick. legitimate upgrade)
Jake Locker
Blaine Gabbert
Andrew Luck (#1 overall pick. no-brainer)
RGIII
Ryan Tannehill
Brandon Weeden
EJ Manuel
Bortles/Manizel/Bridgewater

Only three of sixteen QBs I'd unequivocally take over Dalton and they were all number 1 overall picks

A sobering list for sure..... Some of those guys never had a chance (bad teams), but overall it's an unimpressive group.

BTW -- I think you forgot Ponder.

I did forget Ponder.

But that list just shows how hard it is to find a franchise QB. The Bengals can win with Dalton so I think you have to keep him until you find someone better. Just make sure it's at a fair price

I don't think the front office should move on at QB until they find a better one first. You're not going to find that player in FA. Spending an early pick on a QB is always hit or miss.

The problem is that the market's getting out of hand with any QB who's viewed as more than stop gap is getting close to 20 million a year. In spite of his flaws I think Mike Brown is the perfect negotiator to go against that trend

It really isn't. The salary cap is skyrocketing right now, so ANY very long term deal is gold, especially for a QB. 2 years from now, $18 million will look like a great deal for a QB.

It's a great deal deal for an elite level QB. The problem is every starting QB with a quality skillset isn't an elite level QB. It's probably playing out in KC as well, and Smith has been brilliant in the playoffs. Every starting QB in the league can't be making close to 20 million dollars a year. The market needed to correct itself

Agreed. It's been said numerous times, there is no real 2nd tier of QB's in terms of pay level. You have your A+ guys, and then a bunch of guys who have won some regular season games (and maybe some playoff games) that are above the dregs of the league, but teams are paying these guys as A+ guys because: The cap is going up, everyone knows this, and everyone knows the team has more money to spend. Teams are figuring they at least know what they have in their current starter, and in most cases rather invetst in that over starting over at one of the most important, if not THE most important, position on the team. So, the owners cave and pay.

I'm not sure that Dalton is better than Sanchez.... He certainly doesn't have the same playoff success.

Sanchez also never had AJ Green and one of the best pass blocking lines in the league.

I've been telling my Jet fan friends for two years I would love to get Sanchez on the Bengals. I think he would be just what's needed.

Would a Dalton injury cast a shadow of doubt on his worth? I fear this may happen.

He also had a great defense and one of the best if not the best run blocking line and running game in the league for a couple years. Play action is much easier when everyone is expecting the run.

You are a bronco fan,why you care about the 49 whiners?

Honestly, I do not even know where to begin with you, but here goes..

1) I don't remember mentioning the 49ers at all. There were other people mentioning 49ers, but not me, and I think most of their comments were that of distain for the 49ers, which is understandable being a Bengals fan, wouldn't you think since they are the team that beat us in both our SB appearances? Now if you are saying this because of the thread title, if you actually read the f'n thread you would know that the subject is relative to the Bengals and Andy's Dalton's contract negotiations.

2) I was a Bronco fan before I was a Bengal fan, as I lived in Denver, Colorado from the ages 5-9. I was a big Elway fan. However, we moved from Denver to Ohio when I turned 9 and the local team was the Bengals and I grew up watching the Bengals on tv and they became my team. At 9 you don't have huge team loyalty but I always liked the Broncos ongoing since then, btu I became a Bengals fan.

If the Broncos and Bengals play I root for the Bengals 100% of the time when if we are 0-15 and a win for the Broncos means a trip to the playoffs. However, if the Bengals do not make the playoffs, or not playing the Broncos, I will root for the Broncos.

Not that your ignorant ass deserved an explanation, but now you see how someone COULD BE a fan of two different NFL teams. So stuff it Conrad.

So I guess now you can't be a fan of a team unless you live in the state or city the team is from? Hmmm guess he better go tell his fellow Seahawk fans that don't live in Washington that they no longer can be fans of the Seahawks and should find a more local team.

Also not sure why a fan can't be a fan of more than one team in a single sport. I'm a big Drew Brees fan so cheer for the Saints as long as they are not playing the Broncos (got to cheer for the short guy proving everybody wrong). Doesn't make me less of a Bronco fan because I like to watch another team. Just means I am a fan of football and enjoy really watching all teams.
