This one's a tough one.

It's not my go-to self put down and I'm guessing it's not at the top of the list for most of us. True that we're hypersensitive these days but I don't ever recall getting picked on and put down for having a girlfriend. What's tough is that the words gay and fa*got are entwined but we all know there's Rock Hudson gay and there's Richard Simmons gay. Calling something gay as a negative reference is demeaning but the more frivolous fa*got to me doesn't correlate quite the same. Not even sure if I can explain why.

Now, my go-to put down would likely be idiot and here's what's nuts about that. Idiot originating as a clinical term is on par with moron, cretin, imbecile and yes, retard. Somehow, retard got singled out as the only one you cannot utter out loud ever. Call someone a damned moron....no problem.
