Are there rules that prohibit conference teams from playing bowl games against each other(outside the CFP)? There are times that a good matchup could have occurred if they hadn't played already in the regular season. i.e, Penn St and Wisconsin last year.

If you had a conference that wasn't able to fill its bowl schedule it's possible, but it's difficult to see it happening with any of the NY6 games.

Probably. I think that there would be some interest in playing Penn St as an OOC on the years we don't play them in the conference schedule.

The B1G would probably be opposed to that.

Possibly. What's your reasoning?

A guaranteed extra loss for the conference. They would much rather that you played other teams unless no one else was available.

Possibly, but lame by them if it is. The game would be a helluva lot better than playing Western Bumfuck Egypt College.

To my knowledge, the B1G doesn't play FCS teams, so at least the matchup should be a little better. Worst case, schedule a neutral site game with a P5 opponent.

True, so you would be in favor of Alabama playing Georgia as an OOC, rather than The Citadel or Mercer.

I think once many years ago....Nebraska and OU fans can confirm this....the Sooners played the Huskers in the Orange Bowl.

Other than that, I can't think of it happening in just a regular bowl game.

The 2011 campaign BCS Championship game of Alabama vs LSU.

It had one of the lowest TV ratings, no one wanted to watch that rematch. That game almost single handedly ended the BCS. TV Networks were selling ads guaranteeing a large footprint and they didn't deliver. Advertisers were wanting some of their ad money back. It was a disaster.

The next 2 years produce a lot of questionable or debatable picks for the BCS -- thus ending the BCS era.

… so yes they can play each other … but most of the Nation doesn't want to watch it.

All Bowl game used to be about tourism during a slow travel time of the year (Christmas New Years time frame). For a lot of bowls that is still the case. But the lessor Bowls are more about TV Ratings and networks will pay a lot for a Bowl game. In fact ESPN is a major owner of a lot of the lessor Bowls.

Today Bowls are about Ratings … and a rematch on a National level doesn't seem to draw the ratings ...

Oh, maybe they backed off of it. At one point they had said no more FCS.
That was the case for a few years, but they added a caveat in 2017 that when Big Ten teams have four conference home games out of the nine-game conference schedule, they can put FCS teams on their schedule. Pretty stupid, but at least OSU isn't scheduling any FCS teams anymore, even with the rule change.
