Anyone think our return to being an elite team was hastened by this year's trade deadline acquisitions? I don't think it is coming any sooner because of the trades. I do think the trades do help generate a higher percentage of success in rebuilding within the timeframe we were working towards to begin with. I still think it will be 2022 before we have a legitimate shot at being elite again. We could sneak up and surprise everyone a year earlier than that.

I didn't see the "elite" qualifier, that's hard to say bc that requires elite pitching, which we've essentially never had even in the world series years, very solid to good yes, elite, not so much

Where does the Rangers' rebuild stand after the MLB trade deadline?

"I don't want to put a year on it, because I can't sit here and say 100 percent," he said when asked directly when the team would contend again. "I think the more work we put in to developing young talent in the system, the faster it will come.

"In the previous generation, we were probably in contention a year ahead of what we thought we were going to be. So, I don't know. We're going to put in a lot of work to getting it up and competitive and playing a style of baseball our fans will appreciate and be proud of, as quickly as possible."

The previous generation started with the trade of Teixeira in 2007. The Rangers flirted with .500 in 2008, were a surprising contender in 2009 and won the first of four AL West titles in a seven-year span in 2010.


It is fair to say they have further to go this time around. Under the same time-frame, 2021 would be the equivalent of 2010. It seems a long way off. And it might just be.

But trying to shorten things was only likely to actually make the process longer.

And so the Rangers did what they needed to do, not what they wanted or hoped to.
