Just heard on MLB channel a monster 14 year deal to keep Julio Rodriguez a Mariner is being hashed out as we speak.

This is GREAT for Seattle baseball !!

I am happy for Julio, he has earned this deal by his play and professionalism.

My first thought was: that could have been Jarred Kelenic's money. I hope this inspires Kelenic to try to improve as a hitter rather than just trying to jack everything over the right field wall.

Yes. We don't want his Mariner career to end the way it ended for Griffy, ARod, and RJ.
Exactly what I thought when I heard the news and remember the day each were traded or moved on to Texas.

All three should have been a part of a possible dynasty in their primes but in typical Mariners fashion we let icons get away.

This move for Julio laments a new era in Seattle baseball, we will pay to win and have the guys in charge to make it happen.

Great day in Seattle!

Compared to Griffey's deal with Cinci.

The final piece of the deal came when Griffey agreed to a nine-year contract worth $116.5 million, the richest package in baseball history. The pact covers 2000-08, and the Reds even have an option for a 10th season.

Hard to believe we had four HOFers on those rosters and never even sniffed the World Series. But at least we kept Edgar and he was by far the classiest one of the quartet.

That is my biggest worry. You can have 2 Julio's and still not sniff the WS unless you had meaningful talent around him. They have done a good job on the pitching side, but no bats added under Dipoto scares me. And yes I know he traded for France and signed Julio.

This is a big risk for a guy that hasn't played a full season, but on the other hand M's will always be mid a payroll team so if they didn't pay him this amount they would have just paid 10 players the accumulative amount so...

This is a great deal. Basically pays him under what he's worth unless he plays like an MVP, in which case big incentives kick in. Win-win.

Pretty incredible work by Dipoto keeping the face of MLB around for a decade+ without handcuffing the team's ability to add more.

They had no restrictions after the Cano signing yet they didn't spend. We had no long term commitments before this year and yet we didn't spend. I don't think this changes anything in regards to what we spend. Either Stanton becomes a real spender or he doesn't. And so far...

Huh? No 21 year old has ever regressed? Ever gotten hurt and didn't come back the same (see Lewis)? I hope he becomes the next Jr/Edgar/Ichiro rolled up in one, but committing $200+M for a guy than has played 108 games is never sound business. It is the cost of doing business for a team that has no other avenue of getting talent. Time will tell, but under what he is worth is never a guarantee.

Didn’t you made a separate thread not long ago outlying his real test? By locking him in long term, shouldn’t this be the first step in building around him and could potentially bring in some veterans? That is his “test” right?

I don’t understand where this the Mariners don’t spend comes from? Their last competitive window from 2015-2019 they were anywhere from 8-13th in payroll in all of baseball. I’ve always thought they would spend money they were just poor at where they put their money. Before that from 2001-2010 they anywhere from 7th-13th in payroll.

So far this seems to be a steal for Jerry. I don’t think there is any more amount of praise I can give Jerry.

He was locked in for the next 5 years anyways so not sure how that changes things for the point you are trying to bring up. Do you think it matters to a free agent that JRod will be here in 10 years vs 4 to 5 years which would be the length of a free agent contract most likely? Just saying.
