Never mind that the only way he see's $50 million of that deal is if he is playing at an all pro level. Years 4 and 5 have non guaranteed base salaries. Year three is only guaranteed for injury until the start of the league year in 2018. In reality it is a two year $36.5 million dollar guaranteed deal with buy in options for years 3-5. Did we pay a little more than he was worth?? Sure we did. Is this a deal that will have our children and souls being consumed by the big bad cap monster??

I will put it this way, in 2018 Dallas will STILL take a $8.9 million dollar dead money hit if Romo is released ( or retires). At the same time we would pay $100k more to release Norman.
So 2 years 18.25M per. Yes that sounds much better.

It's not a silly over reaction. It's simple cause and effect. And it perfectly illustrates my point. The NFL is more popular than ever, the pool of money is larger than ever, and in turn player contracts are larger than ever - this is all fan driven. And as long as the NFL is growing we are going to have this conversation every year about which guy got over paid. It's the nature of the beast.

I have no problem with your opinion about Sherman in comparison to Norman. Sherman is in that top tier with Peterson and probably Talib - in that order respectively. Norman is at the very top of the next tier IMO. In this pass happy NFL, guys like that are going to get paid
Yes, but we all know that. It still comes down to paying a guy what he is worth. You don't just give out millions more in guaranteed money to whomever is in front of you just because the cap went up. And I agree with you on Norman. I think a lot of people are going with this zone corner thing because they really haven't even watched him, perhaps don't understand how often we and Washington run out a similar D and like that it helps them say they don't want him. He was great last year. But $50M guaranteed is crazy.

Nnamdi was arguably considered the Top 2 CB @ the time of his free agency & Maxwell was a one hit wonder on a great defense just like Norman.
That was the thinking but it was clear after that his down year the year before was a trend and not a fluke. Nnamdi was no longer the same player at that point and apparently Oakland knew it.

I haven't been home to check the details. Maybe it isn't as bad a deal as I originally thought. So is it $50M guaranteed or not?

Years 1 and 2 are guaranteed at 36.5M this includesvthev15M signing bonus. 2018 becomes guaranteed March of 2018 for another 13.5M. I'm laughing at the idea some are saying they can get out of the deal prior to 18 and ONLY pay him 36.5M, I see that as 18.25M a year for a CB.

You gotta play to play sometimes. When you're desperate for help at that position and a top player at that position falls from the sky ya gotta scoop em up sometimes and roll the dice. This had the smell as the old Redskins at first but you have to remember one thing. Idiot's like Vinnie Cerrato aren't in charge anymore. So that reason alone gives us Skins fans hope. We can only wonder had this GM been there in 2012 would we have made the bad move up to take RG3. I'm actually thinking we don't.

This tactic has worked wonders for the Redskins in the past.

Word is he left his heart in Carolina. He begged the Panthers to sign the franchise tag & fire his agent.

Seems like there are some hurt feelings there. Norman's "sideswiped" comment is telling. At face value, it would appear that the Panthers either know something the rest of the NFL doesn't, or there is a personal issue between Norman and the Panthers' front office. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to not sign Norman to the franchise tag.

It seems to me this is as much a matter of principle as anything. That said, kinda short sighted of the Panthers to let Norman go when they could have had him on a one year deal at fair market rates. The Panthers have real title aspirations, and they took a little bit of a hit when Norman walked out the door.

This is what I've been trying to say. This is why I don't understand the Panthers.

argue about age all you want. in 2 years the skins will regret this. better them than us. if the cowboys draft Elliot, Norman won't help the skins stop him. totally overrated.

Exactly. Must be more to it. You don't let one of the best defensive players in the league from the year before go when you are coming off a SB and it only costs one year @ $14M. Something else could be going on here.

Sounds like his Agent was further apart from Carolina than Norman was. This is a case where the agent didn't care and/or keep his client informed. Odds are the Panthers informed the agent to either sign the tender or they'll pull it. The agent called their bluff, problem was they weren't bluffing.

I think Carolina was silly to let him walk, but they will get a comp pick next year for him. My guess is that they didn't like something about him and weren't willing to risk the future by signing him to a huge contract after one outstanding season. They took a gamble in letting him go, and now also put the rest of their team on notice that no one is going to be able to dictate things around that place. I bet the next contract negotiation is going to be a lot different, with the agents walking on eggshells. If someone doesn't want to be there, the FO will assist them finding somewhere else to go.

Jerry Richardson is a old school type owner. He sent Hardy packing with all his Baggage and alleged talent.
Norman may or may not have been informed with the best advice from his agent but the Panthers let him go. Something maybe in the ointment and time will sort it out but bottom line is Norman is in with the Skins and Carolina is looking for a new CB.

Agents will take notice and negotiate accordingly like Ford said. Not so sure about walking on eggshells how about Landmines not that's being careful. :D:D
