Redskins coach Jay Gruden said rookie receiver Josh Doctson might play in the preseason finale and, at the very least, the team remains optimistic about his availability for the season opener. Doctson hasn't practiced since May 25 because of Achilles tendonitis.

Last pre-season game is fine but I seriously doubt he'll see any action in game one. Dude hasn't gone full speed yet, and last pre-season is nothing but scrubs. Can't see him then play in the reg season opener. Maybe by week 3 he will play in his first regular season game. Just guessing but they don't want to rush their top pick being it's a long season.

Better late then never & they certainly have enough other receiving weapons in the meantime. His real value - unfortunately - will be if/when one of those weapons gets hurt.

Does the active PUP mean that the Skins could activate him at any time?

If he is on the PUP for the start of the season, he can not be added to the active roster until week six at the earliest. But again this might not be a bad thing. Nursing an Achilles and trying to rush back from it, guys tend to over compensate and do damage else where.

See Gallette, Junior.

If he can play in the last preseason game, I don't think they put him on the PUP list. They want to see him play a lot this season for 3 reasons:
1. He's their 1st round pick.
2. With both starting WR's free agents next year, they need to know what they have.
3. He can help them win games - just by playing in certain situations, because he can do things that none of their other WR's can do.

I don't understand how coach can say he will be playing in a game in 10 days when he hasn't even practiced yet. But if he does play that's good news for the reasons Ruz just pointed out.

Thing is, say he does play in ten days, and he tweaks the Achillies again, or worse tears it.... what have we gained??

We dont need him right this moment. We have enough depth at the position that we could probably get away without having him at all this season unless we got hit with multiple season ending injuries.

So why force it other than the fact that he was our first round pick.

IM hoping they just PUP him and let it heal until week six, then go from there.

Manny...

Whether Josh Doctson is active week one or not, it doesn't matter. He's not ready to have early success.

The Redskins invested a first round pick in Josh Doctson with the hopes of adding size to their small group of receivers. Unfortunately, he's barely practiced since being drafted due to a lingering Achilles injury that Head Coach Jay Gruden calls "unique."

Gruden infused some optimism in an otherwise cloudy situation Monday when he suggested that Doctson could be active Week One. But even if that's the case, it really doesn't matter. Doctson is not ready to contribute at a high level in the NFL.

In college, the TCU standout had issues rounding off routes and getting off the line against physical defensive backs. He missed a major opportunity to prepare against guys like Josh Norman and Bashaud Breeland in training camp. Now he'll have to learn on-the-fly during the season, if he's even able to stay healthy.

I think it's naive to believe the Redskins drafted Doctson in the first round only to redshirt him for a year. They drafted the 6-foot-4 target with the expectation of him being able to immediately provide a "big man's game" to this offense. Sure, his size suggests he can just run a fade in the endzone and out jump everyone. But in the NFL, it takes more than leaping ability to have success in that red zone area.

It's going to be tough for him to have success this year, let alone early in the season. Many fans don't care and consider 2017 the year for Doctson anyway. But I'd advise that level of optimism to be lowered.

Doc is 6'4"? I thought he was 6'2"? But hey, what's a couple of inches here or there?
