That was or season great coaching of very young team that got better each game though out the year picking up players that were castaways and then coaching them up to NFL starters in weeks.
Great hire. Makes me think of the 2015 staff where there was a ton of experience in the coaching ranks and well obviously it paid off pretty darn big.
What I'm really happy with is with Shurmur and Shula in the building that Fangio truly can focus on the defense and nothing else. Takes a lot off his plate and lets him do what he does best.
I'm not downplaying anything and I think it's a good hire.
BUT, Are any of you guys old enough to remember the old days? The NFL back in the late fifties and early sixties had a Head Coach, Offensive Coach, Defensive Coach. The Head Coach had an assistant that usually helped the head coach handle the Special Teams. The Offensive Coach had two assistants, one for the line and the other for the backs, TEs, and receivers. Most offenses back then had five OL, two TEs, one, sometimes two WRs and two RB or a FB and two RBs.The Defensive Coach had two assistants and they had the line and linebackers and the other had the secondary and sometimes helped with the linebackers. Defenses were all 4-3-2-2.
It's amazing how specialized coaching has become. Nearly every different position has a coach in today's NFL.
The players are becoming more specialized too. You have run stuffing DLineman and pass rush DLineman, 3rd down backs, blocking TE/pass catching TE. Pretty crazy. It is only getting more specialized.
I am really excited about what this defense can do in year 2. It was a slow start in year 1 and the team still managed a respectable finish once things began to settle into place. Even through a stupid number of injuries.
I like this hire. If they address the DL with a pocket collapsing monster it’s going to be hard to go against this front 7. Especially if the Broncos field an offense that is actually a threat to score instead of stand still and wait for the sack to come. (I swear there were times I thought Flacco must think the opponents’ vision was based on movement!)
