At first blush...this is just about everyone except the die hard 49er homer... I don't wish ill upon Lynch, but this doesn't appear to be a good idea...

Who knows? Maybe it works out and he's a genius.

This is going one of three ways.

Shanny was noted to want a say in the GM before taking the SF job...so if he takes the HC job as reported, I think he was on board. Or he had no say and he takes the job anyway. Third, he stays in ATL.

I think he's gone.

It looks like a certainty that Shanahan is the HC of the 49ers. He, along with York were most impressed with Lynch during interviews, and it looks as if they're following the Bronco model - Lynch as the GM, surrounded by good personnel men. Mark Dominic, former Bucs GM, is strongly rumoured to be aboard in that role.

It's certainly not the route I would've preferred, but I'll wait to see how it turns out.

Who else were they going to hire? Everyone else turned the job down. :dhd:

Strangely enough, they were originally rumored to be pursuing another commentator Louis Riddick to pair with McDaniels. Apparently they weren't worried about experience.

ccording to PFT's Mike Florio, "buzz is building" toward the 49ers hiring ex-Bucs GM Mark Dominik to be new GM John Lynch's right-hand man.

Dominik is probably looking at the title of director of player personnel if hired by the Niners. Lynch has zero experience in personnel matters or scouting, so it will be important for San Francisco to find him a capable sidekick. Dominik was the Bucs' director of pro scouting from 1997-2008 before being promoted to GM in 2009 and getting canned in 2013. He's been working for ESPN as an analyst and does a great job there. Dominik would be a sound hire in the Bay.:suds:

isn't there something askew when the HC is impressed by the GM??

shouldn't it be the other way around??

Part of the problem with the previous GM/HC's in SF was that they weren't on the same path together. York made it clear that it was a priority that both guys, whomever they would be, would work together as a unit. If there was a surprise, it's that they didn't think of Lynch in the same light as the other GM candidates, thus the HC was impressed with the GM.

I just think it was odd that the HC was selected before the GM just goes against traditional thinking but, what the hell, give it a shot

It won't. He basically approved it.

The idea to hire Lynch was his own. He personally called Shanahan and volunteered for the job about a week ago.

Shanahan, expected to be named the Niners' coach after the Super Bowl, thought about Lynch, and the more he thought about it, the more he felt Lynch was a fit for the job. Lynch played for Shanahan's father, Mike, in Denver.

I'm pretty sure that happened in Seattle and KC...both fairly sound organizations.

maybe the same process, but the GM's for those organizations had much more experience than Lynch
