So what do you think of this overall move to pay a DC nearly what your new HC is making? Stop feeding the guy that's just messing around and offer up some insight.

i would have prefered the reverse. I thought they should have made Leavitt the head coach. I was saying that long ago.

So $1.7m a year for a coordinator in general is ok with you, more or less this particular one? I mean that is two separate issues.

That's too much in general IMO and furthers a ridiculous trend in exploding money going for college coaches.

But if you are going to shoot the moon with spending, it should be on a proven commodity that basically can't miss.

This case just feels a lot more like a snap decision meant to shore up and limit the bleeding of this recruiting class. It felt like a rash reaction, but admittedly that's just the outside optics of it.

"The top 3 teams you played lit you up for an average of 32 points. "

Which is just bullshit. Penn State "lit us up" but Michigan held both Wisconsin and OSU in check and both scored a late TD when the game was already over to make the score look worse than it was (as I already pointed out).

The fact is, most of the teams anyone plays aren't going to rank in the top half in terms of offense.

Look at Bama:

FSU: T #78
Fresno: T #78
Vandy: #94
A&M: #44
Arkansas: #64
Tenn: #118
LSU: #71
Mercer: not ranked because it's Mercer

Michigan faced 9 questionable offenses, Bama faced 8. The major difference in records is due to Michigan facing 3 top 10 teams, and Bama facing one. And in 2/3 of those games, had Michigan not had injuries at key positrons it's likely we would have come out on top otherwise because of the position our defense was able to put us in.

So, yeah, I think Michigan has a top 5 defense. And I don't think you'd find many unbiased entity that would take your side.

You realize of course, that 6 of Alabama's played offenses rank higher than 6 of Michigan's. but don't let that get in the way of your narrative. I guess we have different definitions of what questionable is, #44 isn't questionable, 5 teams over 100 is.

Your 3 top 10 teams are ranke #6, #27 and #50 offensively.

Alabama also faced #13, #20, #25 and #45

Mercer would have to have the #300 ranked offense for our schedules to be equal...given that the Bears averaged 25 points a game, while playing Auburn and Alabama and that there are 130 FBS teams and 124 FCS teams, I find that highly unlikely.

Your average offense faced is ranked #79...higher than 9 of the opponents we played. Again, you are not a Top 5 defense, except in a B1G only list.

I, and national experts, don't agree.

Mercer was 80th among FCS teams in total offense so even if you put them behind all 130 FBS teams and the 79 FCS teams thats only 210

What "national experts" have claimed Michigan as a top 5 defense....outside of quoting the stats. Anybody can read a list...it would take some real conviction to believe that. I'm not even sure Joel Klatt could muster up the balls to call you a top 5 defense.

Most talking heads quote scoring defense...you're not even top 10 in that.

Again, you've built your stats against a well below average slate of offenses...your defense is a paper tiger, I'm not even sure that you are top 25, let alone top 5. There are literally 30 teams that would lay 30 on you regularly. Every top 50 offense you faced put up at least 24 on you...you just didn't face very many.

You lost to every winning team you played...Michigan is a 5 loss team at best if they switch schedules with any other B1G East team and 6 loss with any of the top 4 East teams.

Unless Shea plays immediately for you, you are at best an 8 win team next year.

I simply disagree. You're just as guilty of looking at surface level stats to come to your conclusion as you're claiming I am. Outside of the Penn State game, our defense only broken when it was clear our offensive ineptitude was going to lose us the game.

Surface level stats?..you've been exposed by even the slightest level of offensive competence and half the teams you've played are in the bottom 30% of FBS offenses...there is nothing surface level about that. Your defensive prowess is built on playing on average the 79th ranked offense in FBS. How good you not look good?

...and you're excuse is..."we didn't give up 30 until the 4th quarter, when our offense was losing us the game" LOL, Yeah, generally when you get 30+ scored on you some of it happens in the 4th quarter.

Garbage points are garbage points. They're earned in garbage time. Michigan's offense was typically the direct reason points were given up, either by turning it over by a lost ball or turning it over on downs late in the game. It's ridiculous to hold that against the defense. But keep on trying to do so.

You do realize that cuts both ways...when you play 6 teams in the bottom 30% of FBS offensively, which incidentally also includes Michigan, you don't tend to get some points scored on you that you probably should.

Just curious, where do you think Michigan's defense rates in comparison to Penn St, Ohio St, Michigan St and Wisconsin's defenses.

I think Michigan's defense is better than all of them, I think the only comparable one is Ohio State. I'll say this, the only defense I would even consider trading with is Ohio State. If Michigan had to face Alabama, I don't think any of the other defenses (besides Mich or OSU) could even compete with a team like that.

and yet somehow, Wisconsin is rated higher than you in total defense and scoring defense...how can this be?

Personally, I think they are all better than Michigan...or at least even par.

I think based on the number of All Americans on Michigan's defense, you'd be wrong.

New norm? last time it happened was 2009 and 2008 both to Boise. so 3 times in the last decade with like 8 years in between is considered "norm"

Come on now, you guys lost to Oregon State last year. That was a worse loss than any G5 and some FCS schools.

Most certainly, but we don't have a big donor who buys athletic programs for us.
