Player Overview
Jeremy Cash is a little linebacker. That's almost exclusively the position he played while patrolling Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham. This, or any other website, will tell you he plays safety, but that gives a false idea of what he does on the field. Cash plays all over the box, from outside linebacker in a 4-3 front, to creeping right up on the line of scrimmage and shooting every gap possible. From what I watched of Cash, he was rarely put on any coverage islands and didn't play any center field. But Cash is a form tackler who seems to diagnose almost every play correctly, always in position to make a play.

Strengths

  • Reads plays and sniffs out screens, runs and quick passes very quickly. Makes a lot of tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
  • A form tackler. Cash always hits between the pads and the thighs. I wouldn't worry about him ever getting called for head hunting at the next level.
  • An excellent blitzer.

Weaknesses

  • Can struggle trying to hang one-on-one with receivers down the field.
  • I wonder if an NFL defensive coordinator will be willing to deploy Cash in the same way that Duke did.
  • Larger tight ends can control him if they get in his pads, neutralizing him in run defense.

ANALYSIS OF GAMES VS. GEORGIA TECH, NORTH CAROLINA, MIAMI, AND VIRGINIA TECH)
Positives: Jeremy Cash is a tone-setter -- and a name to track at the 2016 Senior Bowl. He is an absolute sledge-hammer who is disruptive in the box. His big hits send turnover-creating jolts not only through the ball carrier but excite his fellow defenders as well. Cash is not afraid of contact regardles of who's in his path, often going at mach speed without showing fear. He has a good ability to shoot gaps and make plays in the backfield. I don't envy being a blocker from the slot and trying to block him because Cash throws them around like children, making plays on hand-offs and screens. His ability to shoot gaps also makes him a good blitzer. Teams would try running out of four receiver sets simply to get Cash out of the box.

Concerns: Though listed at safety,Cash was basically a glorified linebaker at Duke (In general terms, think Cardinals rookie Deone Bucannon). He rarely played away from the line of scrimmage. In the NFL, versaility is becoming more and more important. It's much easier to find a strong safety than a free safety. Cash looks very stiff when having to make sudden movements in the open field. He looked much better in zone coverage than man coverage and that will be an issue at the next level as well.

If drafted by Redskins: Scot McCloughan has already dipped into the Duke program with Jamison Crowder and could do it again. Cash would play near the line of scrimmage on run downs and become a nickel linebacker on passing downs. Redskins did this with Kyshoen Jarrett late in the year after he'd been a nickel corner and safety. With so many questions in the secondary, it's hard to tell where all will line up. If the coaches want to move Jarrett, Cash could take over that nickel role.
