PJ Smith was asked who he see's as starters in the front seven and he didn't even know any of their names.

Had no idea who Jared Afalava is.

I think dumbfounding might be an understatement.

It's gonna be pretty interesting to continue to hear insight from players who were responsible for the fucking train-wreck that was our defense last year.

"I wouldn't say it was appauling... but it was very eye opening and concerning"

PJ also talked about how guys didn't play hard and didn't listen to, or have respect for the coaches.

"Guys were doing their own thing" AKA playing selfish.

Now we know. They were selfish minded players who didn't give a fuck about anyone but themselves and as soon as they faced real competition, it SHOWED.

They were playing for the name on the back of their jersey.

Cant remember 10 new peoples' names... PJ was dumb as dumb

PJ is not dumb. He just doesn't give a shit and he was a major part of the problem.

That kid took literally zero pride in being a blackshirt.

LOL = Lack Of Leadership

WTF is a Blackshirt anyway? That thing Bo hands out when there's only a few games remaining? Why would Afalava or any other underclassman try to make a name for themselves when the guys who most grasp Bo's X's and O's are gonna play anyway?

Complacency, a lack of urgency, a lack of want-to, a lack of character and leadership, a lack of respect for the coaches and each other, and a complete and utter lack of camaraderie.

Lack of talent didn't help either.

I personally think it started with lack of talent, and then all of the other stuff came along with that.....

For most kids these days, when you aren't good at something, you give up.......you submit yourself to the idea that you're only that good. It looked last year like we had a bunch of guys on Defense who thought they were average.

I was on teams like that in High School. Guys who just weren't naturally as talented as others would end up just giving up and then as a team we would just kinda sit there and tread water.

Nebraska's Offense is full of confidence and believes they are great.......the Defense has been just the opposite as of late. Coaching needs to be better to get the kids in the right mindset.

The thing that makes Taylor great is that he knows no limits........he knows of absolutely zero boundaries. He believes at all times that he can do something incredible. He has that Michael Jordan mentality........he just isn't as gifted.

Too many of these punk ass kids want it to come easy, and that's why they need someone to get in their ear and change their attitude.

I'm listening to this 1620 round table podcast. Maybe you guys already heard it.

PJ is saying he was set up to fail.

He says the safeties have to be the erasers for every little mistake the front seven makes, which we all kind of already knew...

Bo's comments though... to the media... do not reflect what PJ is saying.

Bo expects a ton out of his safeties and let's be honest he threw them under the bus without naming names. When he tells the press that guys were "flat out whiffing in space" THAT'S PJ SMITH HE'S TALKING ABOUT.

Question is, who's right? Was PJ set up to fail in run fits, or was Bo just asking way too much of a kid who is just plain not the caliber of athlete it takes to do what his system requires? Dejon Gomes had what it took.

I think one of the major answers to the equation is athletic safeties with great football instincts and tackling ability. That's why Charles Jackson is back there.

So is Bo's scheme demotivational?

Are they giving up in frustration?

:noidea: It's hard saying........

It's interesting how Bo came in 2008 and took a trash team and turned it into a respectable one........

Then in 2009, by the time the season came to an end, he had one of the better teams in the country......

But somehow as that talent decreased, so did the outstanding play on Defense.

I think it's funny too... We all didn't want to believe it, but everyone talked about how the floodgates would open once Lavonte David was gone.

He was a true eraser. He cleaned up a smorgasbord of mistakes in that 2011 season.

He was literally the difference between offenses putting up 30-40 and offenses putting up 70+

I just think that there was a perfect storm of everything you do not want to have make up your defensive unit last year.

I honestly think this is Bo's biggest test since he's been here. He has a bigger uphill battle turning this defense around than he did the '07 one. I really do believe that.

Bo had Suh in 2008 and 2009.

Anybody disrupting the trenches like that is bound to make the back seven look better.

That's exactly why I think this year is Bo's biggest test in terms of turning things around...

There is not a Number 2 pick in the draft ready to erupt on that defense. There are not like 7 fucking future NFL players as upper-classmen on this defense right now.

He's working with a bunch of pups. Pups with upside, but pups nonetheless.
