Any catcher who would start a fight and not have the balls to take off his catcher's mask is not the kind of pansy ass I want managing this team.

Dude was seriously overrated as a player just because he played for Baaaawstun. Don't want him here.

Would Derek Lowe come along and be the pitching coach?

Just be glad it's no longer Z's team; he would have settled for Ayala for pitching coach.

Well, isn't the saying "Those who can't do, teach" ?

Jason Varitek apparently wants to continue working with the Red Sox organization. Bob DeChiara- USA TODAY Sports

According to a report, Boston Red Sox special assistant Jason Varitek was offered the managerial position with the Seattle Mariners -- but he is turning it down.

Source: Mariners officially made offer to Jason Varitek to manage. He will not be accepting the position, and is staying with the Red Sox.

— Jared Carrabis (@Jared_Carrabis) October 20, 2015
Varitek, who played with the Red Sox for the entirety of his 15-year career, is currently a special assistant to the general manager and will stay in that role.

Previous reports stated that the Sox approved of the interview with new Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto, who is trying to replace former manager Lloyd McClendon.

Though Varitek doesn't have any managerial experience, many experts see the former catcher as a great fit for the position, citing his leadership skills and knowledge of the game.

Varitek was originally drafted by the Seattle organization as a first-rounder in 1994, but was flipped to the Red Sox in a trade.

---------------------------------

That makes no sense at all. M's have a long list of interviews so why would they offer him the job before completing it including before interviewing the guy that is suppose to be the number one option in Bogar?

Seems strange, but you never know.

From everything I've read about the guy, it seems like he'd make a pretty good manager. If it's true that he was offered the job and turned it down, that's kind of funny.

They might have talked but it is highly unlikely that they offered him the job, not like we will ever really know though. It just wouldn't make sense to hire a manager with a regime change and not all the other positions are filled.

Asked Dipoto if he offered the job to Jason Varitek: "Innacurate. We offered the job to one person, and he's sitting right here."

Which makes more sense. What manager is going to walk into a situation where he either doesn't know anyone or has major positions critical to your job are vacant in the organization.

I still remember when the M's had a brawl in early 2000 where ARod just took out at 2nd instead of doing what ever other player did and go to the scuffle and pretend they were doing something.

I remember the 2000 playoffs when Roger Rocket knocked Arod down twice in his first at bat and got Arod so pissed that he couldn't focus at the plate. He ended up going 0-4.
