Per Cowherd today.....if this is true, we should sign him, he'd give a veteran presence at #2 while we work Sanu in....thoughts?

We should be looking at any and every available veteran receiver that could be a legitimate #2. Let the rookies earn their keep.

I'd have no problem with a one year contract......this guy caught 68 and 65 balls the last two seasons with Washington and Denver, and averaged over 900 yards......he's proven, and he can at least hold place until our two draft picks are ready.....he'll come reasonably cheap, too.....one thing we are short on at receiver is experience.....

And whose spot does he take. Wanna try and sneak a rookie on the PS and lose him again? No thanks. I'm going with the guys we have.

Maybe he doesn't even make the team, but Whalen is no great shakes, and we can't say for sure that one of our two slot guys won't get hurt again.....if at least one of our two draftees don't deliver, we're in a tough position at #2.......call it insurance.....

We lost Briscoe -- He's not exactly the next coming.

That said, I'm not real high on Gaffney. He's certainly more proven than these rookies, but I've never cared for him.

I wouldn't mind the WR core looking like this:

Green
Sanu
Jones
Shipley
Hawkins
Binns
Gaffney (1 year deal only at about 3 million)

Cut ties with Whalen, Tate.

We'll only keep 6. Green and Shipley locked. Jones and Sanu locked. That leaves Whalen, Hawkins, Binns, Gaffney, and Tate. You guys are for keeping Tate (I'd cut him), so that's 5. Gaffney makes 6, so you're cutting Whalen, Binns, and Hawkins.

Tate's useless.....cut him, and you keep two of Binns, Hawkins, and Gaffney......and we don't know for sure that Shipley will be ready to go, or for that matter that he'll ever recover......nothing wrong with some good old camp competition....

Besides that, I don't see Mike Brown signing a veteran, who will probably want more money than any of the guys already on the roster.

We're speculating, anyway....but if you were to ask me my biggest worry about the offense it would be lack of experience at receiver.....I like the selections of Sanu and Jones, but in many cases receivers take a year or two to acclimate and start producing.....there aren't too many AJ Greens out there....

don't forget, we still have Armon Binns and Ryan Whalen, they should be able to produce right away.

...

my guess is they are going to rely some on the receivers we already have. I just don't see the Bengals signing him.

we also get to watch as another team signs Jacoby Jones, perhaps even one of our division rivals.

:)

I agree, which is why I think they should try and go one heavy there this year, just to see how guys produce. If the younger guys can work their way into the starting mix then we can cut ties with Gaffney at the end of training camp. In the meantime, we have to worry about injuries and experience. A 1 year deal for no more than 3 million sounds like a decent risk/reward, especially if the signing bonus is low, because we can cut him and it only costs us the signing bonus part.
