No they don't. They need to let Newman walk, and keep Hall where he is for now as the slot CB. At least for one more year until they find out what kind of starters Kirkpatrick and Dennard are going to be.

You see what Leon's salary number is next year? Hard to justify that kind of money for a guy that looked lost most of the season.

oh he's gone then. we can get 3 or 4 mediocre roster filler warm body guys for that money.

Looking at just numbers is moronic, but I really wasn't just looking at sacks. I saw Johnson play and he was good half the time, and non-existent the other half. He and Dunlap are average DE's, at least in my opinion. Both of them get taken out of big games when needed the most, more Johnson than Dunlap. I think we made the right decision on which 40 million dollar average DE to keep.

Except again neither are really average. When we had them both we had one of the best defensive lines in football. We could have easily kept Johnson and been under the cap. Good teams find ways to do it every year. And no offense, I'll take the eyes of myself and guys who rate players over yours.

If we don't let players go, then what do they have to play for?

They'd probably commit career suicide if they knew we were going to keep them here.

No offense taken, as I said it was my opinion. I think we made a good decision not resigning him. You don't, and that is cool with me.

I'm actually in favor of keeping Hall and cutting Newman personally. Hall is still a hell of a slot corner and plays very well against tight ends. However, he needs to take a pay cut. He is still our best slot corner and only person on this team who can ever cover tight ends.

Iloka is improving each year with TE coverage as well.

But, we have the cap room already reserved for Hall, Jones is volatile at times in coverage, Dennard is unproven thanks to Marvin, and Kirkpatrick just recently has SORT OF started coming around as a CB option. If we cut Newman, we need Hall to at least anchor our secondary DB's. He is still a quality slot corner, and that seems to be the hardest spot at DB to cover, because they are always going against the fastest, shiftiest WR on the opposing team.

Again, I really like Leon Hall. I've always liked Leon Hall.

But what evidence do we have that he is still a good slot corner? I don't have any numbers on him, but from what I saw on my television, it looked like he spent the entire year struggling.

His contract for next year is ridiculous. He counts 9.6 million against the cap..... Less than 2 million of that would be dead if he were cut. He has the second biggest cap hit on the team (to Dalton) and is the second highest paid player. He's a slot corner with declining skills.

Let me get this straight.... It was okay to not stretch our cap to fit a defensive end in his prime because it would count 8 million against the cap, but it is not okay to cut a guy that is about to count 9 million against your cap and only be a situational player? What?

He made a fee really nice plays on TEs in the playoff game. I remember seeing him make some plays from the slot during the season too. Problem is we wont put him on tight ends full time. They keep wanting to play him out wide which is a mistake. Let him play tight ends, blitz and play zone over the middle and he can be very effective. Don't put him on T.Y. Hit on or anyone like him. And yes I agree he needs to take a pay cut.

Hall's as good as cut...You figure they've seen enough to put Kirkpatrick at one CB slot, and Jones will start at the other. Dennard will get promoted and play slot, or they can move guys around, but those will probably be your 3 guys.

They could also try and renegotiate with Hall. I doubt that Newman will be resigned, unless he takes a huge pay-cut.

Newman is a free agent with talk of him leaning towards retirement.

We have to go defense early and often. DT, DE and LB are musts early. I wouldn't argue taking 2 of any of those positions. I'd like to get Malcolm Brown but I doubt he falls to us. Danny Shelton would be nice too. I think 21 is too early for any of the LB unless we trade back which I'd be ok with. There are a bunch of DE's I'd be good with. Dupree, Fowler, Calhoun, Beasley, though I think we'd have to use him more like Von Miller than an actual DE.

Wonder if the Bengals would look for another rehab project in the secondary. Kyle Wilson was a failure in New York and he's hitting the market.

With as much of a passing league that this is, you need a good solid 4 to 5 quality CB's deep. So if they go project, I am cool with that as long as they feel they can make that player serviceable and not just roster filler.
