But it's also because the college basketball season has begun to REALLY heat up. It's time for the 3rd and final part, where hearts are shattered and NCAA bids are won or lost. Coming up next will be my "Bracketology" special!

My bracketology (Part 1- The major conferences)

This is my look at who's IN, who's almost there, and who still has some work to do to make the Big Dance. First, here are the major conferences:

ACC:
IN: Duke, Louisville, Clemson
Almost!: SMU, Wake Forest
Needs work: North Carolina

Big 12:
IN: Houston, Texas Tech, BYU, Kansas, Arizona, Iowa State
Needs work: Baylor, TCU

Big East:
IN: St. John's, UConn, Creighton, Marquette
Almost!: Xavier
Needs work: Villanova

Big 10:
IN: Michigan State, Michigan, UCLA, Maryland, Wisconsin, Purdue
Almost!: Oregon, Illinois

SEC:
IN: Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas A&M, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi State
Almost!: Vanderbilt
Needs work: Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma

My bracketology (Part 2- The "mid-major's")

And now for the fun part! Here are the "mid-major's" that the big boys should pay attention to:

American:
IN: Memphis
Needs work: North Texas

Atlantic 10:
Almost!: VCU
Needs work: George Mason

Big South:
Needs work: High Point

Missouri Valley:
Almost!: Drake

Mountain West:
IN: Utah State, New Mexico
Needs work: Colorado State, San Diego State, Boise State

WCC:
IN: Saint Mary's
Almost! (according to ESPN): Gonzaga
Needs work (according to me): Gonzaga

The NCAA seeding will be interesting. To me, there is six legitimate #1 seeds, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Duke and Houston (sorry St. John's). That could change (at least two SEC teams won't reach the SEC tourney final) but those six are damned good. So you could be a solid #3 seed and be in a bracket with Duke and Alabama.

I think Duke is basically a lock to get a #1 seed as they will probably win out in the subpar ACC. If Houston wins the Big 12 they’ll get a #1 seed and if they win out in the regular season they could get a #1 seed even if they don’t win the Big 12. At least 2 SEC teams will get #1 seeds, possibly 3. Would be nice if my Gators could get a #1 seed.

Is Georgia in the Dance. 5-10 conference record, three wins against bottom feeders LSU, SC and Oklahoma. Big win tonight and a big win against St. John's (around Thanksgiving). Joe Lunardi has them "next four out" but before tonight.

They probably do but I wouldn't put them in. ESPN has 13 SEC going. Really? The SEC is good but I wouldn't be afraid to play Vandy or Ole Miss in the first round. I think the SEC has six and only five teams capable of a Final Four., short of a run like NC state last year. I thought Missouri might be another but they lost to a very mediocre Arkansas.

I'd still like a rule that a team needs at least a .500 conference record to go to the NCAA. More minnows in the dance. Make the NIT better (we could use another tournament) and makes for huge games now. A last day conference game between two .500 teams is a playoff. Biggest complaint about CBB is the regulars season is boring
