The issue is that there is no united Native American front when it comes to the name. Some hate it, some are fine with it, and most just don't seem to really care.

I would support a name change if there was a true united front by the Native Americans that requested the name to change and not group of PC police just trying to fuel a fire that's not even a fire.

But if Native Americans are apathetic to the name than I don't see any reason why I or anyone else should care either.

How is the Washington Redskins deemed racist yet the far more racist name of the Cleveland Indians is overlooked?

Well, the thought police are after them too. And that's the problem, slippery slope when context and intent aren't used in censorship.

According to who ? That grinning chief Wahoo clownish mascot/logo seemed pretty racist, but I think they've changed that or at least de-emphasized it.

Regardless of anyone's feeling on the term Redskin the word Indian was a derogatory name used by the "white man" towards Native Americans.

Indian to Natives was started the same way the N word was started so I don't get the hypocrisy or the flat out hatred towards the Redskins.

No it wasn't.

It came about because Columbus mistakenly thought he arrived in India and thus he called them Indians and it just stuck as a general term to refer to all Native Americans.

I am truly sorry if Native Americans are offended by such names. With that said I don't believe they should be. I do not believe any of the owners or whoever first named the Redskins, Indians, Braves ect. sat down when thinking of a team name and thought to themselves ya know what I really hate Native Americans let's make fun of them and disrespect them with our team name! I believe the names were intended to show a position of strength and courage.

Just my opinion...

Sorry but none of that is remotely true. Indian was simply the name that stuck because Columbus originally thought he'd reached the East indies. The term Indian was never considered derogatory nor is it today. It's more Indian = black and Native Am = African Am, and none of them are considered derogatory nor anything even close to the N word. I don't know where you got that idea. That's why I asked you according to whom, when you claimed that indian is much more derogatory than redskin.

I don't know what George Preston Marshall's motive was for choosing the name Redskin. The current theory is that he wanted to keep the Indian theme and logo, while while avoiding confusion with the Boston Braves baseball team (the Skins were originally the Braves). But Marshall was one of sport's most notorious racists. That part is not an opinion. It's a fact.

I've discussed this ad nauseam on here and other places about this very issue. Never went well. I was accused of faking my heritage and just trying to be involved in the debate somehow. I will post this yet again in this type of thread: I despise being called an Indian. I am not from India. I am half Native American and have no issue with the term redskin. Thank you PC police for not noticing the simple facts here and when will Columbus Day not be a national holiday? (got suspended in 2nd grade for this rant).

So that's one man's opinion and some blacks prefer the term colored. :noidea:

He was racists toward blacks, but never showed that attitude towards Native Americans IMO. Seem to admire them actually.
